“Cursed Child” Breaks Box Office Record in San Francisco

by Gretchen Roesch · December 30, 2019

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is used to breaking records, and the San Francisco production just added another accolade to the show’s résumé. The West Coast production, which officially opened at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre on December 1, set a new record at the end of the year. The show grossed over $2 million for the week ending on December 29, which means it now has the distinction of holding the record for highest weekly gross of a play in San Francisco history.

Reviews of the San Francisco production praise the “stellar” acting, particularly Benjamin Papac and Jon Steiger as Albus and Scorpius, respectively. MuggleNet’s own review applauded the two, in addition to John Skelley as Harry. American Potter fans now have the chance to see two versions of this spectacular show.

The Broadway production of Cursed Child also had a successful final week of 2019, grossing $2,049,310. The show has been running in New York City for almost two years and shows no signs of slowing down. The Lyric Theatre’s Cursed Child is still the best-selling play in Broadway history, and as of the end of 2019, the show had grossed a total of $163,017,626.

The West End production of the show also had an exciting year, being voted Best Play of the Decade by LondonTheatre.co.uk fans. The show was up against quite a few other plays, including The Ferryman, One Man, Two Guvnors, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and The Inheritance.

Fans can currently see Cursed Child in London, New York City, San Francisco, and Melbourne. Hamburg’s show begins next month, and the Toronto production will open in the fall. You can purchase tickets to any production of the show on the Cursed Child website (except Toronto, but you can sign up for the newsletter).

The Broadway production is the best[-]selling straight play in Broadway history, having grossed $163,017,626 to date.

The West Coast production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been praised for its “dazzling stage magic” (Bay Area News Group), with San Francisco Chronicle raving, “the magic of Harry Potter burns brightly on stage [sic].” Hailed as “stunning…a time-turning, mind-bending adventure” (San Francisco Examiner) and “jaw-dropping” (SFist), the San Francisco production is one of only two destinations in the United States where fans can see the eighth story in the Harry Potter series.

Tickets for the West Coast production are on sale through July 12, 2020, at HarryPotterOnStage.com and in-person [sic] at the Curran Theater [sic] box office. Fans are also able to access some of the best seats for $40 ($20 per [p]art) via the “Friday Forty” ticket lottery through the official website, TodayTix.com or the TodayTix App.

Consistently smashing box office records around the world, [i]n addition to the U.S. West Coast production in San Francisco, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now playing at the Palace Theatre in London, where it received its world premiere in July 2016; at the Lyric Theatre in New York, where it opened on Broadway in April 2018; and at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne, where it opened in February 2019. Upcoming productions also include the German premiere, the first non-English[-]language production, at the Mehr! Theater am Großmarkt in Hamburg in [the] spring of 2020, and the sixth production of the smash[-]hit play will open at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto later that year.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter, and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and the father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son, Albus, must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child features movement by Steven Hoggett, set by Christine Jones, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, music & arrangements by Imogen Heap, lighting by Neil Austin, sound by Gareth Fry, illusions & magic by Jamie Harrison, [and] music supervision & arrangements by Martin Lowe.
