Sorting “It’s a Sin” Characters into Hogwarts Houses

by Stacey Lannigan · April 29, 2021

Warning: The following listicle contains spoilers for the show.

It's A Sin Main Characters

The Characters from It’s a Sin British TV Miniseries

Since its release in January, the British five-part miniseries It’s a Sin has been one of the most talked-about TV shows. The series follows five friends, telling of the trials that they face during the rise of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. Both insightful and entertaining to watch, this miniseries is one that I highly recommend to all. After falling in love with each of the characters while watching it, I couldn’t help but succumb to my desire to Sort them into what I believe would be their assigned Hogwarts Houses.

Olly Alexander as Ritchie Tozer in British TV Miniseries

Ritchie Tozer (Olly Alexander)

Ritchie Tozer – Slytherin

After Jill invites him to be a part of their friend group, it doesn’t take long for Ritchie’s outgoing nature to shine and earn him the position as leader of the group. This title is well-earned since Ritchie displays many leadership qualities such as being self-motivated, people-oriented, and having the desire to be heard. Additionally, If there is one thing that drives Ritchie throughout the series, it is ambition, making him more suited for Slytherin House. Ritchie hopes to use his degree in drama to eventually end up in the West End and earning various other leading cast roles. He dreams big, and even when he contracts AIDS and is admitted to hospital, Ritchie remains optimistic and determined that he will live.

Omari Douglas as Roscoe Babatunde in British TV Miniseries

Roscoe Babatunde (Omari Douglas)

Roscoe Babatunde – Gryffindor

Black, queer, and proud, Roscoe is perhaps one of the most confident characters we meet throughout the TV miniseries. His self-confidence allows Roscoe to express himself through various outlets, such as clothing style and wearing makeup. However, when his sister reveals that his uncle intends to take him back to Lagos, Roscoe takes her advice and runs away from home, confronting his parents in a “mic drop moment” fashion before storming out. The bravery that is shown here by Roscoe and in other scenes, such as when he stands up for his friends and beliefs, proves that he would do well in Gryffindor House.

Callum Scott Howells as Colin Morris-Jones in British TV Miniseries

Colin Morris-Jones (Callum Scott Howells)

Colin Morris-Jones – Hufflepuff

Perhaps the most lovable character in the miniseries, Colin effortlessly captures the viewers’ hearts with his sweet and amiable personality. Much like our beloved Hufflepuff Newt Scamander, Colin is reserved and only comes out of his shell once he bonds with the rest of the group. When he falls ill, his friends rally to his defense and rescue, showing that they feel that he is deserving of it, proving he is a good and loyal friend in return who earns their respect and adoration. His diligence wins him the trust of his boss, who provides him with the opportunity and responsibility of opening up the store, showing that his commitment to working hard does not go unnoticed. For these reasons, the Sorting Hat would certainly place Colin into Hufflepuff.

Lydia West as Jill Baxter in British TV Miniseries

Jill Baxter (Lydia West)

Jill Baxter – Ravenclaw

When it becomes clear that AIDS is a threat that is much closer to home than they all initially believed, Jill wastes no time in taking the Hermione approach. She immediately seeks the doctor’s advice, and after realizing what little information there is on AIDS in London, she provides Colin with a list of books and money to purchase all he can find on the topic from the bookstores in New York. Jill’s desire to seek out all the known facts about AIDS and the trust she puts in the written word about the rising epidemic means that she would do well in Ravenclaw if she attended Hogwarts.

Nathaniel Curtis as Ash Mukherjee in British TV Miniseries

Ash Mukherjee (Nathaniel Curtis)

Ash Mukherjee – Gryffindor

Calm and confident, Ash is the first character to attract the outgoing and eccentric Ritchie’s attention. He is a caring and trustworthy friend who is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in or join his friends fighting for what is right. This display of courage is shown when Ash joins the LGBTQ+ community in their AIDS need aid protest and remains even when the police show up. In addition to this, Ash proves that he is daring in loving Ritchie passionately despite the other boy’s wayward nature and by not being afraid to confess it while Ritchie is in the hospital. Following his confession, Ash tells Ritchie how he may have left it a little late, showing immense bravery in opening his heart despite not knowing if Ritchie will survive. These reasons prove that Ash most definitely would be Sorted into Gryffindor alongside his friend Roscoe.
