Annotated first edition of “Philosopher’s Stone” to go on display!

by Sophie Reid · January 28, 2014

A first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will go on display at the National Library of Scotland. The book was sold last year to a bidder for GBP150,000, which we reported, including some images of the annotations, which will now be displayed. The book has now been loaned to the library for a new exhibition, which celebrates “ideas and inventions originating in Scotland.”

The edition of the book includes…

drawings and notes on more than 40 pages of the book, including references to developments and characters later in the series and the film adaptations. One note explains how Rowling invented Quidditch, the fictional sport played by the student wizards in the best-selling books. The title page of the copy will be displayed on which the author has drawn a coat of arms and wrote that the book “changed my life forever.”

The curator of the exhibition, Andrew Martin, said,

The global phenomenon that is Harry Potter was already featured in the exhibition, but this unique first edition makes it all the more special.

To find out more about the exhibition, visit the National Library of Scotland website here. The book will be on display from this Thursday (January 30).

Are you able to get to the exhibition and see the book? Are you planning a trip, or do you wish you could make it? Let us know!
