The relationship that a film director has with the composer is a crucial one, as the composer is responsible for taking the director’s vision and acting as a translator between the visual and auditory experiences. As such, certain directors and composers often work together, a notable example being director Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams.
BWWClassicalWorld.com reports that the pair, who have been collaborating for 40 years, will have some of their efforts featured in a concert by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) on June 4th, and will be conducted by none other than John Williams himself.
The concert will feature various scores such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler’s List, and of course, Harry Potter. In addition, clips from the films will be projected during the concert.
This will also serve as a benefit, with Williams donating his services in order to fundraise for the BSO musicians’ pension fund.
The concert will take place on Tuesday, June 4th at 8pm, at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall for one night only. Tickets can be purchased through the BSO Ticket Office and BSOmusic.org, and go on sale to the general public Monday, March 11th, but are on sale now for BSO subscribers and donors.
Will you attend this very special event? What was your favourite Spielberg-Williams collaboration?

At the age of 81 and having composed scores for over 125 films, John Williams has become one of the most renowned composers of film music to date. This year’s Academy Awards marked Williams’ 48th nomination, and WhatCulture! has assembled a list of his 10 Greatest Film Scores.
At number ten, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was called “a resurgence in Williams’ career”, as well as earning him another Oscar nomination. Williams went on to score the following two Potter films, but his iconic themes were carried throughout the entire film series.
WhatCulture! says:
“The epic fantasy series lends well to Williams’ musical voice, who from the film’s opening scene sets up what would become one of his most memorable works.”
Among those listed are Schindler’s List (6), Raiders of the Lost Ark (5), Star Wars (2), and Jaws (1).
Williams is now the most nominated person alive today in Academy Awards history, second only to Walt Disney as the most nominated person of all time. We hope to hear much more from him in the future.
What is your favourite John Williams soundtrack? Do you get chills every time you hear Hedwig’s Theme?

Composer John Williams, known for his work on classic themes like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and of course, Harry Potter, is being honored this Sunday, November 4th, at the 7th Annual Benefit Gala for Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA). The event will also honor Los Angeles Unified School District music teacher Linda Mouradian.
ETM-LA is an organization whose mission is to promote music programs in disadvantaged schools, and helps provide music lessons and instruments in schools where children might not otherwise have access to these benefits. The gala is thrown to raise money to support these programs, and will include a silent auction, dinner and concert, and VIP party afterwards. If you happen to live in L.A. and believe in supporting a good cause, tickets to the event can be purchased at ETMLA.org.
During the event, an arrangement of Williams' "Dry Your Tears Afrika" and other pieces will be performed by students who have benefited from the program, and awards will be presented by many illustrious supporters of ETM-LA's cause, including actor Richard Dreyfuss.
John Williams, who has composed for over 100 films in a five-decade long career, is one of this year's "Shining Star" award winners, an honor which ETM-LA bestows upon two people each year "whose contributions through music have changed our lives."
