Yates wins Best Director at 'Empire' awards
Yates wins Best Director at 'Empire' awards As we told you yesterday, Emma Watson was nominated for Best Actress, Dan Radcliffe for Best Actor, David Yates for Best Director, Nicholas Hooper (who composed the fifth film's soundtrack) for Best Soundtrack, and OOTP itself for Best Film and Best Sci-fi/Fantasy at the Empire awards.

The ceremony took place last night and congratulations to David Yates who earned the Best Director award for his work on Order of the Phoenix. Check out a video interview with him at the bottom of this page where he concedes being tempted to direct the Deathly Hallows film.

Further coverage of the event, including photos of Emma Watson, Evanna Lynch, Katie Leung and Jason Isaacs, can be seen here.

Thanks to everyone who wrote in!

That's Great! I Don't Care What They Say, Yates Did A Good Job On OoTP And I Hope HBP Is Just As Good! =]

Posted by amy_loves_rhr Mar 10th 2008

Top 5? Or 10? Yay, well done David Yates? OotP was pretty good.

Posted by MyLifeDependsOnMugglecast Mar 10th 2008

Way to go, Yates! That's so cool!

Posted by ssaint92 Mar 10th 2008

Congratlations!! yates did a wonderful job with OOTB he kept it pretty accurate with the books.

Posted by SportDickinson Mar 10th 2008

Good show, good show!

Posted by Steelsheen Mar 10th 2008

a much deserved win for David Yates! great job! *thumbs up* i really hope he carries through to Deathly Hallows. if he can adapt a meaty and complicated story like OOTP, he's got what it takes to do justice to Deathly Hallows, specially if they're gonna give him a big enough canvass by splitting the movie into two.

Posted by Czechmetz Mar 10th 2008

Woot, congrats! Also, March 24, 25, 26 are the dates set for the WB/JKR vs. RDR Books trial.

Posted by angelina_johnson92 Mar 10th 2008

Congratulations David Yates! But I don't think that Yates deserved the award. OotP was horrible

Posted by kerrman2004 Mar 10th 2008

you've got to be fecking kidding me, he was the worst director! Ok exageration, Mike Newell was worse but Yates was a close second. OOTP was just soooo bad compared to POA. I'm seriously annoyed Yates is doing HBP.

Posted by phoenixknight Mar 10th 2008

LOOK! EVEN IF SOME OF YOU GUYS DIDN'T LIKE OOTP, U HAVE TO GIVE CREDIT TO HIM. IT'S STILL A HARRY POTTER FILM AFTER ALL, SO IF U FOOLS THINK IT SHOULD'VE BEEN ANOTHER MOVEIE THAN HP, THEN QUIT BEING A POTTER AND GO DO SOMETHING ELSE WITH YOUR LIFE!

Posted by VampireKisses Mar 10th 2008

I just watched the video and you wanna know what? Emma does say yeah and um too much. I saw this really funny video on youtube that proves it too. But yeah it was funny catching them...I never noticed before the youtube vid. Glad James MacAvoy and Atonement won! here's the link to video: http://uk.youtu be.com/watch?v=em2QBdEkM9 4 it shows rupes too

Congrats Yates!! You earned it!!

Posted by chommy Mar 10th 2008

@phoenixknight: Holy crap! Calm down. You're acting like a 5 year old. And, regarding this news, all I have to say is the other nominees must have been horrible.

Posted by slugclubgirl77 Mar 10th 2008

yay! congradulations...ok why are some people saying Yates is a bad director. i loved OOTP. suree there are some parts i wish he included but its the same with all the other movies. i guess we will find out if he can pull off HBP.

Posted by hockeyquidditchplayer13 Mar 10th 2008

Congrats to David Yates! I don't the fifth was the best film but considering the length of the book I think he did a pretty good job. Congrats again!

Posted by tiassa Mar 10th 2008

Good for him. I enjoyed the film since I've given up the dream of it been similar to the book.

Posted by starlette804 Mar 10th 2008

Congratulations to him!! (None of the others won??)

Posted by CROOKSHANKS99 Mar 10th 2008

congrats!

Posted by kooldude10694 Mar 10th 2008

My sister is mad cause I'm posting this on her iPhone. Anyway, good job all of you. Nicholas Hooper did do best soundtrack, even tho it wasn't the best HP soundtrack!

Posted by xoxoshannonxoxo Mar 10th 2008

Congrats....but I don't think he should have won it. OOTP was bad. Really bad. Two words, IT SUCKED!

Posted by stephaniennn Mar 10th 2008

I don't know why he won. He pretty much destroyed OOTP. it was terrible. and i curse the day he became director of HBP. but i am glad Harry finally won something.

Posted by xoxoshannonxoxo Mar 10th 2008

I totally agree.

Posted by hplvr92 Mar 10th 2008

Congrats to David Yates; I loved OOTP. For everyone saying that OOTP was horrible and David Yates sucks, that's a bit harsh. You don't have to like the movie/director to appreciate the film as a whole. He brought even more out of the actors, and has no control over what they put into the script. He did the best he could with an 800 page book and it turned out pretty well in my opinion. You're entitled to your opinion, but some of the comments are just brutal. Anyway, I saw Jim Broadbent in the pictures, but no Jason Isaacs. Was there a mix up in the post? lol

Posted by grednforge Mar 10th 2008

YAY Congrats! But once again, Rupert Grint get pushed off to the side when he's the best actor of the three of them.

Posted by rooon Mar 10th 2008

Go David! : )

: )

Posted by i_am_hermione Mar 10th 2008

OK, this is a stupid question, but . . . I know I recognize this week's CC picture, but I just can't put my finger on the name of the movie!!! Help!

Posted by i_am_hermione Mar 10th 2008

anyone?

Posted by Deana Mar 10th 2008

There is a great video of the red carpet featuring Emma Watson at this link. http://www.empireonli ne.com/awards2008/video/v ideo10.asp She's always so sweet in interviews.

Posted by Deana Mar 10th 2008

I_am_hermione, the movie is Hairspray.

Posted by something_quirky Mar 10th 2008

Thats pretty radical

Posted by emma_sophia Mar 10th 2008

Hmmm, not to say that OOTP is the worst movie ever or anything because it isn't and there are some REALLY bad movies out there, but is it really deserving or any sort of award? I think that in general the HP movies really aren't all that great, and in this case, there's plenty of other movies that are much better and more deserving of an award. I feel as if there are many other movies that are much better than any Harry Potter film and the only place that the nominations are really deserved is in the soundtrack category. and why is Rupert never nominated for any awards? I think he is the best actor out of the three.

Posted by trueligth Mar 10th 2008

First good for the award, second congratulation for all the good work he has done in this movie and any other movie he will do. I like it!!!!

Posted by HBP_HagridsBigPoop_ Mar 10th 2008

Yay for David Yates! =)

Posted by SybillT Mar 10th 2008

Anyone watch the video of del Toro with Cuaron and D. Heyman? After Yates' comments about the 7th film, I was curious to see what a former HP director and Heyman had to say standing there with del Toro. Heyman's comment on how "grateful" he was to be introduced by Cuaron is a little interesting. Think he wants del Toro to do the job instead of Yates?

Posted by sirius_lee_G Mar 10th 2008

i will be hoenst with u SybillT: NO I DID NOT!! *proud* ANYWAYS.. ONCE GAAIN DAN WON OVER RUPERT WHICH STIX CUZITS GAY AND EMMA AINT THAT GREAT EITHER.. TOO DRAMATIC AND YATES WAS GOOD THO AND DESEVRED IT AND TODAIS MY B-DAI SO I HAV ETH RITE TO TYPE IN CAPS SO CONGRATZ PPL AND I LOVED TH EMOVIE

Posted by kerrman2004 Mar 11th 2008

I will say it again just to express how annoyed I am lol you've got to be fecking kidding me, Yates was the worst director! Ok exageration, Mike Newell was worse but Yates was a close second. OOTP was just soooo bad compared to POA. I'm seriously annoyed Yates is doing HBP. Here whats wrong with the film: Way to much left out, and it was too short. Harry and Cho's relationship totally portrayed inccorectly with all the real detail missing, no character development or bonds. He couldn't get Emma to act to save his life. Ron and Hermione relationship, where was it? There was no fighting or jelousy and there was meant to be! The ministry of magic scenes were a complete joke with nearly all of the detail missing e.g. Them getting separated for ages, Ginny breaking her leg, Hermione being knocked unconscious and Harry thinking she's dead. Ron being attacked by those weird brains. ALL OF IT WAS MISSING! Yates is an idiot and the film should have been 3 hours long not 2 hours 20 minutes. I fecking hate Warner Brothers too! Who agrees? plz comment

Posted by kerrman2004 Mar 11th 2008

also, like a lot of people have mentioned its a total travesty that Rupert doesn't win any awards, he's the best actor out of all the younger cast. He's the only one who can actually act. Dan is getting better but he has no-where near Rupert's ability as an actor. I can't wait to see the fight they have in the tent in Deathly Hallows coz Rupert is really good at acting angry while Dan trying to act angry, he just looks odd.

Posted by kerrman2004 Mar 11th 2008

ssaint92: tell me you are joking please! OOTP was the most inaccurate and worst HP film ever! Ok GOF was bad but it was way more accurate then OOTP and POA was so accurate i loved it! You need to get your eyes tested if you think OOTP was accurate! half of the book was missing!

Posted by Andreea Mar 11th 2008

Indeed the OOTP is not so accurate but this doesn't necessarily mean that Yates is a bad director. If the movies were identical with the books i don't think i would of read any of them...

Posted by slugclubgirl77 Mar 11th 2008

kerman2004_3 - i dont totally agree with you because i did not hate OOTP.I trhink it could have been better but i thought it was pretty good. I do agree with you on the whole ministry part they had time to include all those scenes, which would be really cool to see. I personally liked OOTP better than GOF. But thats just my opinion and i'm sorry if you dont like it.

Posted by kerrman2004 Mar 11th 2008

Thanks slugclubgirl. I'm sorry too i wish it had been way better. I liked OOTP a tiny tiny bit more then GOF but only because Fred and George got lots of screen time and they're big 'leaving hogwarts' scene. Thats about it. The whole Harry/Cho thing was such a joke. They only had 3 scenes in the entire movie. Their kiss, the scene where they are chatting but you can't even hear what they're saying and then they broke up. How is that portraying the relationship? She was harry's first crush for gods sake, its kind of important! And they totally got the reason why they broke up wrong.

Posted by sweasley Mar 11th 2008

Judging by a lot of these comments and critiques of Yates, I'm pretty sure most of you don't have a clue what a director does, lol. Yates is a fine director. He's the best one the series has had so far (not that that's saying much).

Posted by phoenixknight Mar 11th 2008

Shutup kerrman2004 ! Just shutup! Before you go ranting to everyone else your opinions, be willing to back it up... you said, and i'm quoting you: "Ok GOF was bad but it was way more accurate then OOTP and POA was so accurate i loved it." Are yo freakin' kidding me?!? POA left out all the plot points. Where was the explanation behind the Marauder's Map and Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs that had everyone (including me) confused? Where was the Quidditch Cup Harry won? Who wanted to add more nonsense like little munchkins playing the organ that JKR had to caution him that there are no little ppl at Hogwarts? Huh? Who totally ruined the Secret-Keeper issue? There's alot more that's not worth my time, but Cuaron basically messed up the plot, hurting GOF and OOTP a little bit. Like everyone was confused when Voldemort started calling Peter Pettigrew Wormtail! Or when Harry Potter started calling Sirius Black Padfoot! If Alfonso Cuaron directs DH, that means DEATH for Harry Potter, ruining the Whole Series, i'm GLAD he's not directing it... JK Rowling even said that YAtes is her favorite director and OOTP is her favorite movie, that was the first that nearly NAILED it! So, if she likes it, then I LIKE IT!
