Potter MMORPG confirmed by WB VP of Marketing
Potter MMORPG confirmed by WB VP of Marketing Yesterday we told you about an e-mail from Warner Brothers concerning the possibility of a Harry Potter online game. We also reminded you that there was one being developed by EA several years ago until it was cancelled.

Today, Snitch Seeker has confirmed to us the source of the e-mail: Warner Brothers Vice President of Marketing Sandy Yi. She sent Snitch Seeker an e-mail similar to Pottersphere's:

The notion of creating a Harry Potter multi-player online role playing game is something that we've been discussing at Warner Bros. for a number of years and continue to explore. We are currently investigating the possibility of creating our own MMORPG but unfortunately do not have any further details to share at this time.

So, this DOES confirm that Warner Brothers is working on some sort of online Potter game that could be similar to games like World of Warcraft, The Sims Online, or Second Life. It's doubtful we'll hear any more about this for a while, but stay tuned!

Whoo! That's awesome!

Posted by RabidSphinx Jun 4th 2008

that sounds like it will suck up a portion of my life for about 3 weeks before i get over it and move3 on. HP games are notoriously lame

Posted by alastormoody Jun 4th 2008

COOLNESS!

Posted by angelina_johnson92 Jun 4th 2008

Yay, it seems like a lot of fun, I can't wait!

Posted by lightbluesnitch Jun 4th 2008

well, that could be cooool

Posted by mallyfever Jun 4th 2008

Haha, the Potters Online. That sounds incredibly awesome.

Posted by rebel_hermionex7 Jun 4th 2008

Haha wow that sounds really cool. I'm excited.

Posted by rebel_hermionex7 Jun 4th 2008

Haha wow that sounds really cool. I'm excited.

Posted by love_1776 Jun 4th 2008

I actually wouldn't mind playing it. I think it could be really good.

Posted by habook2 Jun 4th 2008

I'm not. At all. This is just WB trying to further monetize a series that should end with movie 7. What could the game possibly be about anyway? Trying to earn house points and Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans just like in every other HP game but this time with other people to help do ... do ... something? Ugh.

Posted by permafrost Jun 4th 2008

This will be bad! HP does not have the world to sustain a MMORPG, or the environment to appeal to non-HP fans.

Posted by jace555 Jun 4th 2008

Where do you think this will be able to take us? Oviously hogwarts but I wonder where else we can go.

Posted by something_quirky Jun 4th 2008

I think it could be interesting, although I think that Harry Potter would appeal to a younger crowd, that wouldn't be able to pay, or parents wouldn't be willing to play. But if it was free...Hey! I would play it.

Posted by alex_c98 Jun 4th 2008

Booyah! Jace555, I'm guessing places like Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley... just anywhere in the HP books, really.

Posted by weasleyismyking17 Jun 4th 2008

SICKKKKKKKKKKKK!

Posted by pippin Jun 4th 2008

this is so ridiculous, is second life like the game Dwight plays on the office, because if so people need to get a life and maybe go outside.

Posted by YodaDumbledore Jun 4th 2008

w00t w00t!

Posted by rockstarkisses Jun 4th 2008

i'm excited! this is something i know i will become addicted to... :) yay

Posted by remusrox55 Jun 4th 2008

YAY!!!! I made a lot of virtual friends on one of disney's online games, then it closed. We temporarily keep in touch over a site, but this will let us keep in touch somewhere else!!!

Posted by accio_everything Jun 4th 2008

oh wouldn't it be amazing if blizzard made this game? well we can hope.

Posted by ALe_Av Jun 4th 2008

So exiting, I wold totally love this

Posted by Missalicious Jun 4th 2008

It's online so it's going to be interactive, which is going to make it 100x better than the other video games based on the movies. (those ones are lame, I agree!) And I bet you'll be able to go to more places outside hogwarts. (Hogsmead, diagon alley, the dark forest? maybe even grimmauld place and the burrow??) As amazing as it would be if Blizzard made this game (WAAAYYY better than EA!!) I highly doubt they'll invest in it. But I'm kind of picturing a simplified version of World of Warcraft which would be fantastic! My only hope is that it's based more on the books and not the movies.

Posted by GriseldatheGood Jun 4th 2008

Oh no, WoW-like addictions are notoriously hard to break!

Posted by manchesterutd Jun 4th 2008

wow, can't wait for more news as they develop the game. Hopefully it'll turn out good.

Posted by armormew Jun 4th 2008

LOL nice graphics guys.

Posted by merrymarge Jun 4th 2008

I like the idea of a on-line Harry Potter game. But, I prefer jigsaw puzzles. Not sure if I would play any on-line games. Might try it out.

Posted by TrixyLeStrange Jun 4th 2008

I think this could be a very exciting addition to the Potter family. I mean if it is a World of Warcraft type thing then think about all the witches and wizards that could be created. It sounds like the fully interactive version of an RPG that I played last summer called Hogwarts on AIM, but instead of an instant messenger interface it would be actually characters interacting. If there is a Voldemort character, think about how many people that could try to defeat him. Or something much more dark and sinister could rise. It could be so fun! I so would play it! If only for the chance to make my own character, that was always my favorite part of playing The Sims.

Posted by Missalicious Jun 4th 2008

yes, WoW addictions ARE notoriously hard to break LOL! I guess it depends on the personality you have tho, cuz I'm definitely not the type that plays all freaking day and gets so sucked in I try making my character eat food when it's in fact MY body that needs it lol!! (yes, I've heard of it happening) I'm actually the type that gets a little overwhelmed and burned out after a while, but it is indeed a very nice boredom killer!! :) If it's a nice blend of sims online and wow, it'll be a great game. :)

Posted by ClosetPotterFan Jun 4th 2008

I'm all over this. I would try it out for sure, even though I've never tried any games like this before. I will probably spend too much time doing it though. Maybe we can be sorted and go through school and choose a career and whether or not to be bad or good. It could be fun, and addictive.

Posted by trueligth Jun 4th 2008

Cuont me in for the game, lets hope is as good as the other video games and the movies.

Posted by Travis Jun 4th 2008

Cool. I think that a HP MMORPG has some real potential, but it probably won't be very fun if it's created by EA. It would be best if Blizzard were to make it. I'll still play it obsessively though either way. Of course, it still sounds like they aren't even sure about wheter or not they're actaully making this.

Posted by poofer Jun 4th 2008

No. It doesn't confirm that they are working on a HP MMORPG. All it confirms is that they are thinking about creating one.

Posted by Muggledude Jun 5th 2008

Talk about an addicting game! Can't wait

Posted by nitrogen Jun 5th 2008

lol this will be cool for a couple days, then it's gonna get boring. I also got the GoF game for ds and it sucked. (No offense. Just IMO.)

Posted by Aarequin Jun 5th 2008

The biggest problem I see with this ever becoming a REALLY good game (anywhere NEAR WoW would be phenomenal, since WoW is really in a league of its own) is the target audience. Harry Potter, whether we like to admit it or not, is marketed towards young kids and is predominantly a children's thing. Older readers, especially the age group that would really capitalize on a "good" MMORPG is not within the marketing scope of Harry Potter. Therefore, I think that such a game would end up being some really dumbed down version of the Sims, with limited advanced gameplay and strategy, which would suit the most profitable target group - young kids. Bottom line: I think the biggest obstacle for such a concept is the improbable profits and success resulting from a necessarily narrow target age group.

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Jun 5th 2008

I love the logo XDDDD.

Posted by LordNeon Jun 5th 2008

Targeted for young kids? The 2-3 first books maybe, but I'll say the rest of the series are more for teens++ as well as adults in my opinion. But a cross between WoW and Second Life....hmm interesting. :)

Posted by hermionesfuturehusband Jun 5th 2008

Ive never really cared for online games but i will DEFINETLY have to check this one out.

Posted by HPfanatic71 Jun 5th 2008

Being a HP fan and also a WoW player I highly doubt that they can create a HP game in league with WoW. Just not gonna happen. But I'm sure a few people would play it. Also EA is atm teaming with Mythic making the next huge game Warhammer Online. That should be coming live in Oct/Nov. I can't see EA getting into making another huge mmorpg right after War. If they did it would take years to do :)

Posted by MissKaye Jun 5th 2008

I think it would be cool, a HP version of WOW or EQ(everquest). You can go to alot of places...there could be a bazzar like in EQ where you buy or sell things. You can fight different creatures depending on your levels or what you are. You can fight in groups to make it easier, apparate, spells of course..you could go to the different schools from the triwizard tournament. you can loot from the dead things you find or kill. You can go into the forbidden forest. i mean you can really go anywhere in the world it doesnt have to be limited to hogwarts, the town or the forest. Hey if your in a high enough level you could probably go to romania where most of the dragons are. You can even go to azkaban and fight off dementors and stuff. you can speacialize in wand making or potion making and sell to others. I mean there are tons of things you can do so i dont think it would be a complete disaster. i mean idk if it would be as popular as WOW but you never know. they made a starwars version of it so i dont see why this wont be a possibility. I see it as a way to keep HP alive and for kids, teens, and adults all over the world to communicate and play together. I agree about the names though. Itll be kind of hard when everyone wants to name their characters from the books. Unless they wont let you because those characters can be PC players. Oh and not to mention you can choose to be students, and get put into your house of choice or w/e else they might have deatheaters, teachers, or even creatures...Idk i guess we will have to see if they make it or not. to see how it actually will be. If they are creative enough i think they can do alot of things with it. they have a whole book of creatures that they could use as well to guide them.

Posted by Erfa Jun 5th 2008

Harry Potter would be awesome as an MMORPG, but not with EA making it. Nevertheless, it's interesting to see what they come up with.

Posted by the_shrieking_snack Jun 5th 2008

Wonder if Jo will sue... :D

Posted by MagicMaker222 Jun 5th 2008

That would be so awesome!

Posted by heckboy Jun 5th 2008

i'm hoping i can be a dark wizard or deatheater. maybe team up with other dark wizards and try to break into gringotts. i'm sure people would like to be aurors and work for the ministry. etc.. i think the potential is unlimited. it could be as good as wow. maybe you could be a centaur or house elf or giant. who knows but like others have said they may decide to cater to the kids and we all know kids love to have things dumbed down for them. yup if there's one thing i know about children its that they like being treated like they're stupid and not capable of playing a complicated game. also the kids that grew up reading harry potter are in thier twenties now. the little scamps.

Posted by DeaflyHolla Jun 5th 2008

I'm addicted to wow (World of Warcraft)! I'm addicted to Harry Potter! Now if they somehow figure out a way to combine the two --------- I'm doomed :(

Posted by SlytherinBabe Jun 5th 2008

HOLY shhh YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOOOHHHHOOOOOOO!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!

Posted by harry_potterdude Jun 5th 2008

omg, yes finally! I'm so gonna kick ass inthat game

Posted by dracodragon Jun 5th 2008

That would be super sweet!

Posted by HPfanx14 Jun 5th 2008

hahah this is neat. it looks so, un harry potter-y tho. it looks cartoon. lol idk. usually harry potter covers for things are deep and secrety.

Posted by 00Lydia00 Jun 5th 2008

This should be interesting. I have no expectations for this game at all, and of course I'll try it out, but EA will probably do it since they've done all the video games, and it will probably suck. Oh well. It seems like WB is just trying to milk the Potter franchise for as much as it's worth, though. We'll see how it turns out.
