JK Rowling still 'working hard' on Book 7
Jo Rowling updated her official site today with a new diary entry and a new addition to the rumors section. In her diary, Jo fills us in a little on Book 7's progress - she's currently "writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more" - and says, "I both want, and don't want, to finish this book (don't worry, I will.)" She also details a recent dream in which she was both Harry and the narrator.

I was searching for a Horcrux in a gigantic, crowded hall, which bore no resemblance to the Great Hall as I imagine it. As the narrator I knew perfectly well that the Horcrux was jammed in a hidden nook in the fireplace, while as Harry I was searching for it in all kinds of other places, while trying to make the people around me say lines I had pre-arranged for them. Meanwhile waiters and waitresses who work in the real cafe in which I have written huge parts of book seven roamed around me as though on stilts, all of them at least fifteen feet high. Perhaps I should cut back on the caffeine?

Could this dream have some bearing on an event in the seventh book? JK also wrote in her rumors section: "Harry will NOT merge with Voldemort to become a single entity, nor would Harry ever wish to command Death Eaters/Dementors/Inferi," debunking the theory he would.

LOL. I loved her dream. It was so funny. I wonder if she was giving us any hints... JK. :D

Posted by witch_in_training Dec 19th 2006

Oh My God! I am so excited! This isn't a title, but it's something to let us know she's still alive and kicking (and more importantly, writing!)

Posted by Firebolt1 Dec 19th 2006

Wow.....

Posted by Helene Dec 19th 2006

Heh! This is good stuff! I bet we'll get the title soon! Happy Holidays, everyone!

Posted by rachel9isfine Dec 19th 2006

I am SO excited!!! Any news from her is like the best thing ever.

Posted by witch_in_training Dec 19th 2006

And I find it surprising that she has just now had her first Harry Potter dream. I have them all the time, and they are the best dreams ever. Except for one where I was being possessed by an underground society and made to murder people. That one creeped me out for the rest of the day.

Posted by Fire_Whiskey_ Dec 19th 2006

Nice one Jo, good to see some proper news from her. Hopefully she's building us up for some big news for christmas......

Posted by theREALginny88 Dec 19th 2006

Yeah Jo updated! I hope she gets book 7 done soon, I cant wait to much longer..... I wonder about the dream though... I hope it has some truth to it....

Posted by Miss_Malfoy Dec 19th 2006

I'm glad she updated her site, but I want a title for Book 7!!!!!!!

Posted by cybii Dec 19th 2006

still beats my nightmare of a naked Dobby...

Posted by Smarty_Roxy Dec 19th 2006

dosen't beat my dream of naked Draco *sigh*, good times, lol.

Posted by scarred Dec 19th 2006

does the giant waiters thing have anything to do with the giants? i wonder which horcrux she was talking about....something that might be hidden at hogwarts? should we take this dream seriously at all? anyway, so dan believes snape is one our side then...why did she have to mention that? many, if not all, of the fans would agree to that, i guess. but i liked the way his situation was described. for all the Indians out there, discuss hp with ur fellow Indians at groups.yahoo.com/group/in dian_hp

Posted by kleigh629 Dec 19th 2006

I hope since she's writing scenes that have been planned for a "dozen or more years" that is a hint that she is nearing completion of the book. She says she's known how the series will end since she started writing HP that must mean she's planned out the end scenes from the very beginning! And while updates are good, a title or better a finished book would be better. Throw us a bone Jo, we're DYIN' out here!

Posted by dinky_diddy_kins Dec 19th 2006

Who thinks up these insane theories?

Posted by mrssiriusblack Dec 19th 2006

brill update but its no title is it! if shes been planning these scenes for years then they're gonna be good! oh btw am i EVER gonna get top ten!!

Posted by Vivi_rules_pie Dec 19th 2006

I'm hoping she took a break and wrote not only that update, but an update for chritmas as well... That would be nice. It would also be nice to have something other then then "Pre Order Book 7" up at the top of the site, like the book title for instnace.

Posted by Ryuji35 Dec 19th 2006

Very Nice!! hope we could get more from Ms. Jk about Book 7, I really can't wait!!

Posted by Jane_Eyre Dec 19th 2006

Posted by brussell_sprouts91 Dec 19th 2006

come on, jo! give us more than that! though it does make it sound like she's almost done... hehehe yay... maybe we'll get the title for christmas

Posted by spangle50 Dec 19th 2006

That's so weird! I had a dream exactly like that the other night! Well, not quite exactly :) It's very interesting to see how such a great mind works.

Posted by Jane_Eyre Dec 19th 2006

on second thought...i think it will. she did not say "happy holidays" or anything like that so I bet this weekend there will be a surprise!

Tell us SOMETHING ABT THE BOOK Jooo... its CHRISTMAS !!! :-)

Posted by NeonDisease Dec 19th 2006

Please let's have a title or a release date for Christmas! :D

Posted by Magpie Dec 19th 2006

Not that I'm a dream analyst or anything, but, perhaps it has to do with the pressure she's feeling about finishing the book. She admists she wants/doesn't want to finish it and is probably getting all kinds of pressure about finishing. So her "split personailty thing" going on in the great hall could be more a manifestation of her vision of the book's end and the pressure she's getting to finish it. She has, in the past, admitted to changing the plot of seven (saving one character and killing off two others in return, etc..) - maybe she felt some pressure from the public about finishing it one way while she had plans to finish it another...I highly doubt she would change her plot just to accommodate a bunch of whiners, but I cannot even begin to fathom the pressure she must get from the public, the publishers, etc... One things for sure - we'll all find out next summer!

Posted by Dorien Dec 19th 2006

What a dream! I don't think it contains some 'hidden event' from book seven, but still... cool dream!

Posted by ArtemisLykeios Dec 19th 2006

1) Jo, of course, really is both Harry and the narrator of his story. Perhaps we should be asking ourselves how his quest reflects her overall development through life -- spiritually in particular, I surmise. 2) A Horcrux hidden in a fireplace? Well, fire has always been an intriguing symbol in these books, with at least two characters functioning as personifications of it, so it's no surprise that it is on the author's mind. (And yes, it will have something to do with the resolution of the series, methinks.) 3) Maybe she is starting to prepare many fans out there for a cold slap of reality regarding Snape. (As I am confident that he is even more evil -- and powerful -- than we know, I won't be disappointed if this turns out to be true.) 4) So Harry and Voldemort won't be merging.... That doesn't mean that two other characters won't, but it certainly won't be anyone we would immediately suspect.....

Posted by GramSybil Dec 19th 2006

It seems she gave ua a little tidbit like this, (hard-at-work-ect) two years ago. And 2? days later we got a title for Christmas. And a few days later we were told she give it to her publisher. All I want for Christmas is some Harry Potter News. Ho Ho Ho, JO!

Posted by HpAlwaysN4ever Dec 19th 2006

Is she perhaps telling us that there really is a horcrux at hogwarts? Hmm

Posted by ShilohBailey Dec 19th 2006

OMG, we may get a summer 07 release!! I am really starting to feel it may be finished by then!!! =D!!!!!!!!!! Thanks sooo much Jo, for the update! =)))) I'm sitting her researching plant spores in school, and I decided to take a break... and what a surprise was waiting for me!! =P And yes.. I think we may get the title for a Christmas prezzy!!!!!! *squeeee* !!!!!

Posted by Kadaj Dec 19th 2006

"As the narrator I knew perfectly well that the Horcrux was jammed in a hidden nook in the fireplace..." oh dear, that doesn't tell us much now does it? I wonder which Horcrux it is.

Posted by oldest3 Dec 19th 2006

I don't think that she was really giving anything away, if it was something of importance I don't think that she's that dense as to tell us one of the climaxes in the story. I think that she made that up, but I don't think that she'll have hidden it in a fire place, I think that voldemort would want more of an extravigent and secret place to hide his horcuxes. I mean look at the elaborate measures that he took to hide the locket! I dunno. Hey but thats cool and I'm way glad for the update!!!

Posted by bwof Dec 19th 2006

Okei well it doesn´t seem like it´s going to come out next summer but maybe that´s for the better, I mean it is afterall the last one so...But I am glad she is working on it and very closely so if she is dreaming about like that :). But even though she is still writing maybe we could get the title as a present, you know, after a couple of days for a certain holiday...;)

Posted by tovarbaker Dec 19th 2006

I think the comment she made about how she is now writing things etc, that have been planned in some cases, for more than 12 years, to me that says, she is wrapping the book up. also the fact that she would dream about harry tells me she has a little anxiety about finishing (and that she is working hard on the book) which also leads me to believe that it is close to finished... although I think we can stop hoping for a Christmas announcement like we had two years ago... too bad

Posted by Kadaj Dec 19th 2006

"Dan has changed his theory on Snape; he says he doesn't want to be like one of those people who are photographed, beaming, next to mad dictators." That sentence structure is akward.

Posted by candycrops Dec 19th 2006

GRRRRRRRRRR. Come on JK give us something other than how hard your working, please please we need a title. Im starting to suffer harry potter withdrawel again and its not pretty.

Posted by ChoChang Dec 19th 2006

Help us all! :(

Posted by roadtripkaraoke Dec 19th 2006

Yeah...there's no way were getting a 7/7/07 release, which is a shame. I was still sort of holding out hope that she would spring it on us, but that's looking less and less likely. tear.

Posted by hp323232 Dec 19th 2006

cul!... but kinda wacky...

Posted by auror1470 Dec 19th 2006

On her site she states that she does and doesn't want to finish the book but that she will finish...I am certain she is just as sad as we are that the story is ending. I of course would love to have 7 more books after book 7 comes out. Alas, that won't happen. All I want for Christmas is the title to book 7...Please Jo...:-)

Posted by The_Maltese_Fan Dec 19th 2006

Whi thinks she is, at least, going to give us a title or give us the last WOMBAT on Christmas day? Still, whatever she does, I really don't think we are to have a 7th July 2007 release and, as other have said, it is a shame, because it was such a spectacular date.
