Afshan portrayed Hogwarts student Padma Patil in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. She also voiced her character in the the video game for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Although Padma Patil is in Ravenclaw in the book series, her character is put in Gryffindor for the film series. She found out about the role when casting agents visited her school and held auditions, although she originally auditioned “just for the fun of it” with her friends. However, after being called back for further audition sessions, she got the part.
Afshan had always been a big Potter fan and was “a bit star-struck” her first day on set. However, during filming, she became good friends with Scarlett Byrne (Pansy Parkinson), Katie Leung (Cho Chang), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), and Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley). Afshan remains in contact with Scarlett and has attended several fan conventions, including Ascendio 2012.
Afshan attended the Slumdog Millionaire charity fundraiser in 2009. The funds went to Plan UK, a non-profit that helps impoverished children around the world.
