  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
  • 3 Tbsp. cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 cups milk fat-free
  • 3/4 cups applesauce unsweetened
  • 1 Tbsp. canola oil
  • 1 Tbsp. molasses
  • 2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup chocolate chips mini


  • 1 bucket cotton candy



  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Line about 18 2.5" muffin cups with cupcake liners.
  • In a bowl, combine flours, sugars, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, combine milk, applesauce, oil, molasses, balsamic vinegar, and vanilla extract.
  • Mix wet mixture into dries. Stir just until moistened, batter should be lumpy.
  • Stir in half of the chocolate pieces.
  • Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups, filling each cavity just over halfway. Divide remaining chocolate between tops of cupcakes.
  • Bake for 15 minutes.


  • Once cupcakes are cool, use a butter knife to create a cavity in each one. Cut about halfway into cupcake.
  • Pinch off a large piece of cotton candy to fill each cupcake.
