Tributes Pour in for Richard Griffiths

by Claire Furner · Published March 31, 2013 · Updated October 16, 2017

As previously reported, the actor Richard Griffiths passed away last week after complications following surgery. Since the tragic news broke, fans and colleagues alike have paid tribute the “supersized man with a supersized talent.” Heralded as one of the “very greatest” of his generation, the actor is best known for his roles in Withnail and I, The History Boys and of course as Vernon Dursley in the Potter series. Below we have collated some of the hundreds of messages left in celebration of a phenomenal career and in remembrance of a talent lost.

Simon Beresford (his agent)“[He was] a remarkable man. On stage he allowed us to share in our own humanity and constantly question our differences. Richard gave acting a good name. He was a remarkable man and one of our greatest and best-loved actors. He will be greatly missed.”

Warwick Davis: “You got a great deal of support (as an actor) for having Richard about. He was lovely, he would always make time for his fans, that’s what makes a great actor, it’s about having a good persona.”

Tom Felton: “Very sad to hear about Richard Griffiths passing. Long may his work bring joy to the world. Great fun, great man.”

Emma Watson: “RIP Richard Griffiths. You will be missed”

Chris Rankin: “RIP Richard “Uncle Vernon” Griffiths… What an awful shock. Such an amazing man and sublime actor. Was a pleasure to know him. Totally Gutted”

Evanna Lynch: “RIP Richard Griffiths. Cannot believe this news, it is such a terrible loss. Thank you for being a special part of the Potter family.”

Paul McGann: “Awoke to the awful news about Richard Griffiths. A mighty tree has fallen. Heart goes out to his family and loved ones.”

Richard E Grant: “My beloved ‘Uncle Monty’ Richard Griffiths died last night. Chin-Chin my dear friend.”

Samuel Barnett: “I am So fortunate to have known Richard Griffiths and to have worked with him. A master of understatement, subtlety, comedy and heart.”

Russell Tovey: “Really sad. Our mate and leader has moved on to the theatre in the sky. We will miss you so much Richard Griffiths.. RIP you wonderful man x”

Jack Whitehall: “Sad news about Richard Griffiths. He was my god father and friend. An amazing, funny and kind man he will be much missed. RIP Riccardo”

James Corden: “We miss you already, Rizzo. Rest in peace.”
