UPDATED: Matt Lewis Can’t Wait to Showcase His Cockney Accent

by Sophie Reid · Published January 11, 2016 · Updated May 3, 2018

Last summer, we were excited when Matt Lewis (Neville Longbottom) posted a picture of himself dressed as a Victorian policeman for a new role. We soon found out that Matt had taken a role in the upcoming Amazon Prime drama Ripper Street. Since then, we’ve learned a little bit about the series, including a trailer release last month.

In a new interview with the Metro, Matt has revealed that he enjoyed the challenge of a cockney accent in the drama, where he will be playing Desk Sergeant Samuel Drummond.

As an actor, it’s quite nice to never know what you’re gonna be doing next, and since I finished on Harry Potter I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve been able to do some wildly different characters. And one thing that I’ve never done before is anything period, and I’ve basically done a Leeds accent – which is my accent – in everything I did.

On the show itself he said,

and then I read the scripts which were brilliant, and obviously the cast that I got to work with. It was a bit of a no-brainer, and it was kind of everything I hoped it would be. It’s been a great few months.

Make sure to watch the trailer here.

UPDATE:

Check out an interview below with Matt and his co-star, Adam Rothenberg, where they talk about growing mustaches and stunts on set.

Ripper Street will be available on Amazon Prime in the UK on January 15.

  • “Pensieve” is made up of two words: French for “to think” (“penser”) and an English synonym of “strainer” (“sieve”). A Pensieve strains your thoughts!
