Unique Miniature “Philosopher’s Stone” Manuscript for Sale

by Shelby Dale DeWeese · Published December 7, 2017 · Updated November 11, 2019

A one-of-a-kind tiny manuscript of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, written and hand-illustrated by J.K. Rowling for charity in 2004, is set to be sold next week and is estimated to go for £120,000 (or approximately 160,500 USD). The pint-sized book measures 1.6 inches x 2.4 inches and includes a green-and-gold cover as well as 31 pages of original drawings and short text extracts from Philosopher’s Stone.

The book was sold to a private collector in 2004 for £10,000. Now, 20 years since the full-sized novel was released, the collector has decided to sell the unique item. The tiny book is in perfect condition, despite being 13 years old. The manuscript will be sold by auctioneers Bloomsbury of London, who have given the estimate of between £80,000 and £120,000.

Clive Moss of Bloomsbury spoke about the rarity of this collector’s item.

This is the first complete book of its type and is incredibly rare and unique… It dates back to 2004, when there had only been three Harry Potter movies released. This pre-dates much of the Harry Potter lunacy that was to come.

Moss expects that Harry Potter fans will be eager to get their hands on the manuscript.

It is in perfect condition and is exactly the sort of thing that will get the serious Potter fans very excited… At the moment with the 20th anniversary, Philosopher’s Stone items are sky-rocketing in price and we’re really hoping to get some good interest in this over the next few weeks.

Moss says that despite Bloomsbury’s estimates, the auctioneers believe the book could be sold for an even higher price.

We’ve set a guide price of between £80,000 and £120,000 but no one knows where the current crazy prices are going to end, so who knows what it could make… There are very few of those surviving but this is a completely unique one-off and we’re really expecting it to build up some fantastic interest.”

The sale is scheduled for December 14, and after a first-edition copy of Philosopher’s Stone broke auction records last month, we’re sure the buyers will be eager to grab this one-of-a-kind book! We’d certainly be thrilled to get our hands on this rare J.K. Rowling original!
