“Harry Potter” Marathon Coming to Syfy and USA Networks This Summer

A lot of fans were disappointed at the end of last year when we learned that Freeform would no longer be airing its “Harry Potter Weekend” marathons since basic cable rights to the Potter films changed over from Disney to NBCUniversal at the beginning of this year. NBCUniversal decided to license the streaming rights to HBO, which aired a marathon of its own to kick off the new year.

Now, however, it appears that the fans were heard, because all eight Harry Potter films will be returning to basic cable on NBCUniversal-owned networks Syfy and USA. The marathons will now be given the more updated, franchise-encompassing name of “Wizarding Weekends” rather than the “Harry Potter Weekends” that aired on Freeform.

Once the rights transfer, the films will no longer be available to stream on HBO. A precise date for the transfer is expected to be announced in the coming weeks, but we know that the first marathon will air on Syfy and USA this summer.

Check out the trailer for Harry’s new TV home below, featuring clips of a number of costumed fans talking about the films.

Are you happy to see Harry Potter marathons return to basic cable?

I have been a fan of Harry since 2000, a fan of MuggleNet since 2005, and a MuggleNet team member since 2013. I believe in the power of stories to bring people together, and nothing does that quite like Harry Potter. I live in Toronto, Canada.
