Skipped Herbology Class Again?

by Holly Moberly · May 1, 2018

Plants are the veins of our earth. Without them, human life would not be possible. Not only that, but plants are also extremely useful in potion-making and have many useful properties to aid our every wizarding need. So here’s a list of some of my notes on plant uses I’ve been taking in Professor Sprout’s Herbology lessons. I know you’ve missed the last few, so I thought you’d appreciate it. Use them wisely!

Stuck in a Devil’s Snare situation? Use Fire Seeds.

These seeds are collected from the Fire Seed Bush – a spiky, red-hot organism with no leaves. These bushes can be found in certain caves in the Forbidden Forest. Make sure to be wary when collecting Fire Seeds! They will give you some killer burns if you forget to use a Freezing Spell before harvesting them. Add some lavender, mint, valerian sprigs, and powdered dragon horn to the seeds, and you’ve got yourself a Fire-Breathing Potion! Brew this with discretion, though; the liquid can burn skin down to the very bone.

Struck by those werewolf woes? Use wolfsbane.

Wolfsbane (also known as aconite or monkshood) is found in untamed places and has very toxic leaves. The plant contains magical properties that make it perfect for creating the Wolfsbane Potion to ease lycanthropy. However, ingestion of the Wolfsbane Potion must be done using a goblet on each day of the week preceding a full moon. It requires great care and money to access wolfsbane due to its rarity, so many lycanthropy sufferers actually do not receive the treatment they deserve.

Sea lavender is a pretty plant great for commemoration.

Indigenous to coastal areas in England and Wales, the roots of this plant have been used by Muggles as a decongestant and to reduce bodily toxins. However, it has not yet been discovered how to best turn this plant into a useful potion. Instead, this dainty purple flower is mostly used as decoration or for the commemoration of loved ones in the magical world.

Gillyweed is required for underwater exploration.

Native to the Mediterranean Sea, gillyweed enables the user to adopt amphibious traits, such as gills and webbing. These allow the taker to breathe underwater for roughly an hour. It is slimy and composed of long, white tails. The properties of this plant were first discovered by Elladora Ketteridge, but Beaumont Marjoribanks was credited instead. Gillyweed is also used as a component of gillywater, a drink sold at the Three Broomsticks.

Need protection against dark enchantments? Use moly.

This plant has a stem cloaked in black, and its flowers are white. Moly is a vital ingredient in the Wiggenweld Potion, which is known for how difficult it is to make since it involves 15 ingredients in total. The concoction is able to awaken a person from magically induced sleep.

When you’re lacking in confidence, use Witch’s Ganglion.

A green-fronded plant with a blood-red bulb that throbs, Witch’s Ganglion is rare and found growing on ponds in the Far East. The plant is a key ingredient of the Potion of All Potential, which was invented in a Wizarding Schools Potions Championship during the 21st century. The potion brings out the best in the drinker.

Knotgrass is required for identity transformation.

This dainty plant bares resemblance to traditional grass, except the stem extends into tear-shaped green leaves. The production of knotgrass is largely dependent on the amount of rainfall received that year. However, it can be found growing in the Forbidden Forest. The grass is also required for Polyjuice Potion, which allows a person to assume the form of someone else.

Use Venomous Tentacula for when guard dogs just seem too boring.

This dangerous carnivore has a large, tooth-filled mouth and dextrous vines that are well adapted for grabbing live prey. Some varieties of this plant even shoot fireballs from their mouths. Venomous Tentacula plants are illegal to trade, and some have been known to ensnare intruders! Who needs a burglar alarm anyway?

I hope these notes were useful. You had better be in Potions tomorrow. If I have to look at one more goat’s stomach on my own, I swear I’m going to come into your room and heal you myself!
