“Crimes of Grindelwald” Cast Dishes on Relationships, Alison Sudol “Forbidden” to Discuss Queenie

by Gretchen Roesch · July 23, 2018

The cast of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald sat down with Entertainment Weekly following their panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Jude Law (Dumbledore) discussed his character’s relationship with Grindelwald and the cast chose which wizarding world characters they’d like to be. The interview also touched on the complicated relationships between Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), Leta Lestrange (Zoë Kravitz), Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner), and Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston).

The interviewer brought up the topic by asking Kravitz about her character: “Leta Lestrange has a very recognizable last name, but we don’t know much about her. She’s engaged to Theseus, but Newt carries a photo of her around.”

“I know, what’s that about?” Kravitz replied jokingly.

Redmayne jumped in:

I mean, it’s complicated is all I have to say… He’s kept this girl in his heart all this time, and he comes back and she’s engaged to his brother! That is complicated family stuff right there!

Waterston defended her character in her reply: “I mean, personally, I just really don’t understand why it would be a problem for you. Haven’t you moved on?”

What kind of relationship will we see between Newt and Leta? What about Newt and Tina? Will Newt’s lingering feelings for Leta put a strain on his budding relationship with Tina? Will it create a rift between himself and his brother? This complicated set of relationships could be a main conflict in the movie.

The interviewer then asked Alison Sudol (Queenie Goldstein) and Waterston to discuss their roles in the upcoming film. Waterston immediately turned to Sudol and said, “You can’t talk.”

Sudol agreed. “I mean, I can’t. I’m just forbidden to say anything.”

“We have new outfits,” offered Waterston.

“Yes,” nodded Sudol, “I can talk about my dress, but that’s about it. It’s plaid. And that’s basically all I can say. But the rest of it is juicy.”

What could this mean for Queenie’s role in the film? The fact that Sudol can’t reveal anything makes us think she could play a very important part in this movie. We haven’t heard Sudol say anything about the character so far, and she only appears two or three times in the trailer. What could Queenie’s role be? Will her loyalties be tested? Speculate with us in the comments!
