Why I Love the LEGO “Harry Potter” Games

by Rachael Dechert · May 30, 2021

During the past year, I’ve rediscovered my love of gaming. I had a lot more free time to sit at home and play video games without worrying about having to run errands or hang out with friends. After finishing a few of the newer released games, I decided to return to my old favorite, the two LEGO Harry Potter games. As much as I love the other Harry Potter games, I truly think that the LEGO Harry Potter games are the best.

During this stressful time, I feel like we all need a low-stress activity in our lives. As much as I love video games, I often find myself stressed out during fight scenes and while exploring new places. The LEGO Harry Potter games are definitely low-stress. There are several fight scenes, but they are all simple enough to complete and easy enough to redo if you mess up the first time.

It’s comforting to explore the areas that you already know. Through reading the books, watching the movies, and playing the games, I know the layout of Hogwarts from top to bottom. In the LEGO games, you get to explore these familiar areas while searching for studs, hidden objects, and students who need saving. You also get to explore other areas like Diagon Alley, the Burrow, and the Ministry of Magic. These games truly make you feel immersed in this magical world while focusing on the fun elements and eliminating most of the stressors that you find in the other Harry Potter games.

Have you ever dreamed of strolling through the halls of Hogwarts as Lucius Malfoy or wanted to bring Lord Voldemort to Grimmauld Place? Then this game is for you. After your first playthrough of each scene, you can go back and replay it as any character who you’ve unlocked. In fact, to 100% complete the game, you have to go back through and play as other characters. There is even the option to create your own character to play as. This adds a ton of fun moments when you can make different characters act completely differently from how they normally would. Personally, I love playing as either Lucius Malfoy or Tom Riddle for the added hilarity.

As a completionist, I love the LEGO games because they are so easy to 100% complete. To do this, you have to unlock all the characters and extras, save all of the students in peril, complete all of the gameplay chapters by finding all of the hidden objects and pieces of the Hogwarts crest, and collect a certain amount of studs. Nothing about it is particularly difficult; it’s just a matter of taking your time to go through and cast spells on everything that you possibly can. It does take a lot of time, but it ends up feeling familiar and relaxing when you go through chapters again to try and find everything.

The cutscenes are truly my favorite thing about the LEGO games. The ones in the two Harry Potter games are fantastic. They are the perfect blend of telling the story and adding humor that adds so much to the story. Normally, when I replay video games, I tend to skip through all of the cutscenes, but I never find myself doing that in these games because they are so good.

These are some of the many reasons why I love the LEGO Harry Potter games. I find myself playing them over and over again because they are just so much fun. Playing these two games is the perfect way to unwind, especially in these stressful times that we live in. Do you have a favorite Harry Potter video game? What do you love about the LEGO Harry Potter games? Let us know in the comments.
