The Wizarding World Wins in Three Categories at the Licensing Awards 2021

by Helena Everett · September 20, 2021

The Wizarding World franchise has an excellent track record for being nominated for licensing awards. And this year is no exception. In fact, the winners of the Licensing Awards 2021 have been announced, and the franchise has won in three categories.

The Licensing Awards first began in 2006 and celebrate all aspects of the British licensing industry. Some categories include Best Retailer of Kids’ Licensed Products, Best Licensed Paper Products or Stationery Range, and Best Licensed Adult Apparel or Accessories Range. Past winners have included Frozen, Marvel Avengers, Doctor Who, and Star Wars.

Due to the pandemic, the awards ceremony in 2020 was digital. This year, the ceremony was able to take place in person as a live event (although attendees were at a reduced rate) and went ahead on September 14 in the Great Room at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Each entry was reviewed and scored by a panel of licensing experts. Let’s take a look at which categories the Wizarding World franchise won in.

This category is for licensed properties active in the British market between June 1, 2020, and May 31, 2021, aimed at an adult market (12+). The other contenders were Barbie, emoji, Friends, The Grinch, The Mandalorian, Marvel Universe, Peaky Blinders, and Stranger Things.

A win in this category was a first for the Wizarding World, although Harry Potter won in 2018. The choice of licensed Wizarding World merchandise is vast. You can pick up anything from Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans and House chocolate bars to clothing, soft toys, wands, jewelry, enamel pins, and so much more. Previous winners in this category include Friends (2020) and emoji (2019).

The award for Best Licensed Food or Drink Range went to Kinnerton Confectionery and Marks & Spencer for their Harry Potter range. Created by Kinnerton Confectionery and sold through the British high street store Marks & Spencer, the selection was launched in time for the festive season in October 2020. Items included the Chocolate Frog, House crest tins filled with milk chocolate balls, a chocolate Golden Snitch, and a Forbidden Forest Advent calendar.

The top prize again went to Marks & Spencer, this time for its Potter range of children’s apparel. The range includes, but is by no means exhaustive of, Patronus print hoodies, Quidditch sleepwear, Harry Potter slippers, and Potter Wellington boots. For ages 0–12, there is something here for any young Potter fan.

A total of 30 awards were given on the night. Some of the other lucky winners include Pokémon, which won in the Best Gaming Licensed Product category, and Peppa Pig, which won Best Preschool Licensed Property. The Classic Licensed Property Award went to The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

It is, however, not just about winning. It’s still a big deal to be nominated and to reach the finals. The Wizarding World franchise also made it to the finals in five other categories:

  • Harry Potter boy’s Suitmeister dress-up from OppoSuits in the Best Licensed Dress-Up or Partyware category
  • Harry Potter In The Style sweatshirts from Brands In in the Best Licensed Adult Apparel or Accessories Range category
  • The Wizarding World collection from Wow! Stuff in the Best Licensed Giftware Range, Home Décor, Tableware or Housewares Range category
  • Wizarding World in Best Children’s or Tween Licensed Property (Age Group 5–12)
  • Harry Potter in the What Kids Love category

To be nominated for the prestigious Licensing Awards is strived for by many, and winning is high praise. Well done to all the winners, finalists, and nominees.
