Five Reasons Why Matthew Lewis Deserves His Own Late Night Show

by Gauri Pandit · December 13, 2015

Matt Lewis, popularly known to the Harry Potter community as the underdog-no-more Neville Longbottom, just unveiled a side of his that fans certainly did not anticipate. Much to the fandom’s delight, the actor has dropped the fat suit after the Potter films and taken up some eclectic roles, displaying different aspects of him.

To add to his eclecticism, Matt, along with comedians Tom Parry and Clint Edwards, joined Tom Price two nights ago on BBC Radio Wales’s The Leak to review the current affairs from Wales and beyond. Matt was his charming self, delivering a genuinely interesting podcast. This led to the catchy hashtag #Neville4NewsNight and to us thinking that maybe Matt Lewis would host a great late night radio show and perhaps even has a few more undiscovered tricks up his sleeve. To get you up to speed, allow us to demonstrate why Matt having his own show would make absolute sense.

1. He’s informative.

Throughout the podcast, Matt seemed well informed about current affairs and had no trouble keeping up with the comedic discussion of the biggest news topics. As Tom Price raised the topic of the Storm Desmond floods, Matt added to the conversation, saying,

I read it yesterday, that apparently one of the biggest problems was that they’d put all this money into defenses from the riverbanks, etc, but when it came down in rainfall, six feet or whatever it was, the defenses worked the opposite way and stopped the water getting back into the river and away. So it had a complete adverse effect.

Ten points to Gryffindor.

2. He knows how to lift the mood.

If you have read any of Matt’s interviews, you’d know that he has a delightful sense of humor. A great example of this was when the price drop of oil/petrol was being discussed during the podcast, Matt offhandedly says,

Well, it’s cheaper than a liter of water from WH Smith, isn’t it? So I might just start making my tea with that.

3. He’s always his adorable awkward self.

True to his character as the nervous Neville Longbottom, there’s a certain awkwardness to Matt that’s equal parts endearing and amusing. As Tom Price introduces Matt, the latter admits,

I don’t know what I’m doing here.

And later expresses his excitement for the petrol price drop.

I’m just so excited!

This uninhibited candor would be a great attribute in a radio show host! Never change, Matt.

4. He’s not afraid to express his honest opinion.

Other topics discussed on the podcast included a short discussion on Donald Trump during which Matt voiced his candid opinion.

It’s just insanity […] If you give someone enough rope, they’re eventually going to hang themselves, and he’s a prime example of that. […] The worrying thing would have been is if he kept all this to himself, became the president, and then started doing it.

5. His Al Pacino impression is spot on.

One of the highlights of the podcast was the discussion of comedienne Sarah Silverman’s recent tweet in Welsh, in spirit of which the guests were asked to do an impression of an American saying an iconic Welsh phrase.

Listen to the entire podcast here to catch Matt Lewis’s uncanny Al Pacino impression. It’s available to listen and for download only for the next 28 days. What do you think about Matt Lewis hosting a late night show? Let us know in the comments below!

Potter Quote

“Only this morning, for instance, I took a wrong turning on the way to the bathroom and found myself in a beautifully proportioned room I have never seen before, containing a really rather magnificent collection of chamber pots. When I went back to investigate more closely, I discovered that the room had vanished.”
