“Fantastic Beasts” Roundup: Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston on Movie Magic

by Sophie Reid · April 16, 2016

Since the release of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trailer last Sunday, the Potter world has been buzzing with excitement and discussion. And of course, since that means a wave of more Fantastic Beasts news and content, we’re delighted. It’s only been a week since our last Fantastic Beasts roundup, but we’re already back with another bursting installment.

This week, we’ve heard from Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), who is relieved to have the content out in the public eye, Katherine Waterston (Tina), and J.K. Rowling herself.

Eddie spoke to Access Hollywood at CinemaCon this week about what he likes about magic, visiting the theme parks, and being a Harry Potter fan. Check the video out below.

Pottermore posted an interview with Katherine Waterston, where she spoke about working with director David Yates.

Usually on a movie, you’re going into new territory together, and you’re like, ‘Is there quicksand around the corner, are there going to be wolves attacking?’ Whereas David[ ha]s been here before, so he’s just like, ‘You’re going to take a left here and avoid the quicksand’.

He has a shorthand and a comfort with the world. He’s not precious with it; he understands what it needs and what it doesn’t need, and there’s something really comforting in that.

Waterston also spoke about the film itself and being a part of the richly imagined world.

It’s so clever, and it’s rooted in truth. It’s got light, funny elements and then much darker, more adult elements. I normally don’t respond so well to innocent lovely things; I think, ‘come on, let’s get on with it’. But there’s something about this script and the way J.K. Rowling writes; it’s tender without being saccharine. It never lingers on the sweet parts, but maybe that’s a slightly English thing: “Oh, I felt something – moving on!” No, really, it’s a beautiful film. It’ll kill me to finish filming it.

Jo also commented on her involvement in the film:

This is a different level of involvement. I feel very very close to this project.

It was revealed at CinemaCon this week that Fantastic Beasts is one of the films chosen to be released in Dolby Cinema, “with its Dolby Vision high dynamic range format and with Dolby Atmos immersive sound for supported theater configurations.”

And finally, on that trailer. Jo tweeted some thoughts, sharing the following on the content of the trailer (admittedly, not much at all, but enough for now).

Albus Dumbledore is fond of Newt Scamander for the same reasons that I am fond of Newt Scamander. You're welcome. https://t.co/bNdwX6Tf40

Dumbledore was a young teacher at the time Newt was expelled. He wasn't able to revoke expulsions. https://t.co/UskHwSQvtJ
