MoM Elections: A Speech from William Waverly
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!! Adalina Mancer reporting on the Ministry of Magic Elections. William Waverly has just finished giving his campaign speech, and my, what a speech it was! Hopefully, we can have a video of it for you soon!
Waverly wasted no time getting into things. He introduced himself, gave us a bit of background, and launched right into his platform. “When I become Minister, I will make sure all witches and wizards have equal rights. Pure-blood, half-blood, Muggle-born, it doesn’t matter. You are all wizards and should be viewed as equals. My other goal for when I become Minister is to bring Muggle technology into the wizarding world!” he stated.
That comment sparked interest in the crowd. He went on to explain how he intends on integrating technology into our world. He said that there were four modern Muggle inventions that he wants to integrate. They are – and I apologize if something is incorrect, it was a little hard to understand – cell phones, e-books, video games, and robots.
Similar to a standard telephone, the cell phone’s main function is communication. However, there is a convenience factor because it’s portable. When talking about the cell phones, Waverly excitedly said, “Imagine! A world where your letters won’t get lost by owl! Where communication is instant! Where you don’t need to be by a fire to contact someone through Floo powder!! A portable little rectangle that provides instant communication.”
Video games were a foreign concept to all in attendance. Apparently, they are a source of entertainment for Muggle children. They are playing in some alternate universe where if they die or are harmed, no physical pain is actually caused. On his plan for introducing these video games to the wizarding world, he said, “I would make it so you are completely submerged in this alternate reality. You could explore and fight monsters without causing yourself bodily harm. There are so many different avenues that haven’t been explored. I intend to make a truly interactive yet safe world.”
Now, an e-book is a book that is on your phone. It has all the pages and information you need, but it is not physically there. Waverly said, “Student lives at Hogwarts would be made easier through the introduction of e-books. No more lugging dozens of heavy books through the corridors and up the stairways. It will improve their physical health while still providing them with the knowledge for their mental growth.”
What he wants to do with the robots, however, is a little more progressive. His goal is to create robots that can guard Azkaban Prison. In his speech, Waverly explained, “We can’t risk keeping Dementors, or other creatures, in charge of Azkaban. First, there’s the question of loyalty. They may have switched sides once; who’s to say they wouldn’t do it again? Secondly, there’s the humanity aspect of it to consider. Prisoners are people, too. They deserve access to basic human rights and an environment that is conducive to rehabilitation instead of torture.”
When it was time for reporter questions, I managed to ask him about his opponent’s opposite viewpoints. On the subject of Bianca Blishwick and her platform, he said, “My opponent, Bianca Blishwick, wants to separate pure-bloods and Muggle-borns in education. She wants to create a school for pure-bloods and a separate school for Muggle-borns. Hearing this is disheartening, and sets us back many years. We’ve come so far uniting all magical humans that reverting to this prejudice will negatively impact society in such a way that I don’t know if we’d ever recover.”
Reggie Stump has views on the opposite end of the spectrum from Blishwick. She wants to include all magical people, as well as creatures, in the government. On this Waverly stated, “My other opponent, Reggie Stump, wants to unite wizards and magical creatures. My main concern for this is the inability to communicate with the majority of these creatures. It will prove difficult to explain the rules to them and have them comprehend. There are also several groups of creatures that have renounced their being status for beast status. They could have had representation in government but decided against it.”
In a campaign of polar opposites, Waverly is the middle ground. What do his opponents have to say? Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks to see!!
