“Fantastic Beasts” Dominates the Weekend Box Office!

by Megan Fischer · November 20, 2016

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is proving to be fantastic, indeed!

IMDb reported that the film topped the weekend, making $75 million in its domestic debut.

According to Box Office Mojo, Fantastic Beasts has over a $15 million lead over Marvel’s Dr. Strange, which came in second with $17 million on its third weekend, and had a whopping $70 million lead over The Edge of Seventeen, which was also in its opening weekend.

Combined with the international sales of $143 million, the total adds up to about $218.3 million worldwide!

Variety reported that a majority of the ticket sales went to people over 25 years old – 65% of sales, to be exact! It seems as though the younger crowd was less inclined to experience the magic, with only 18% of ticket sales going to people under 18 years old.

Unfortunately, Fantastic Beasts didn’t quite stack up to previous films in the Potter universe. The lowest-earning Potter film, Prisoner of Azkaban, earned $93.7 million domestically in its opening weekend.

Other opening weekend numbers for previous Potter films were:

Sorcerer’s Stone $90.3 million domestic/Unknown for international
Chamber of Secrets $88.4 million domestic/$59.5 million international
Prisoner of Azkaban $93.7 million domestic/$113.5 million international
Goblet of Fire $102.7 million domestic/$85 million international
Order of the Phoenix $139.7 million domestic/$193 million international
Half-Blood Prince $158 million domestic/$236 million international
Deathly Hallows: Part 1 $125 million domestic/$205 million international
Deathly Hallows: Part 2 $169.2 million domestic/$314 million international

We have previously posted reviews on the film, both spoiler-free and spoiler-filled.

Have you seen the film yet? What did you think of it?

Potter Quote

“Only this morning, for instance, I took a wrong turning on the way to the bathroom and found myself in a beautifully proportioned room I have never seen before, containing a really rather magnificent collection of chamber pots. When I went back to investigate more closely, I discovered that the room had vanished.”
