The Thunderbirds of Hogwarts

by Richa Venkatraman · January 24, 2018

While your Hogwarts House describes your “why” or your motivating values, your Ilvermorny House describes your “how” or your approach to life. Thunderbird House has been described as the House of the soul and favors adventurers. Thunderbirds are defined by their experiences, ideals, and choices; like the Thunderbird itself, students of this House are often tempestuous people. Some Thunderbirds are soul-searchers looking for their place and purpose, while others can go through all of life’s challenges while knowing exactly who they are.

1. Harry Potter

Source

At the age of 11, Harry Potter knew that he would never join Lord Voldemort. As little more than a symbol to the rest of the world, Harry has to fight daily to free himself from the expectations of others. He stands up to people like Fudge, Umbridge, and Scrimgeour, who would have him pretend to be what he is not in order to fulfill their personal agendas. He accepted Dumbledore’s idea of his destiny only after months of internal struggle brought him to the same conclusion. Harry doesn’t necessarily go looking for trouble, but when trouble finds him, he is more than ready to rise to the occasion.

2. Bill and Charlie Weasley

Bill Weasley worked for Gringotts as a curse breaker who ventured into dangerous ancient tombs in Egypt and uncovered lost treasures to bring back to the goblins. Then, he came back to England and did covert work for the Order of the Phoenix. Charlie Weasley studies dragons in Romania and is the kind of person who would unquestioningly help his baby brother smuggle an illegal dragon out of Hogwarts. Both are defined equally by their sense of adventure and their Weasley roots; they travel the world and have numerous thrilling experiences while never forgetting where they come from.

3. Remus Lupin

Source

Remus Lupin was thrilled when, despite being a werewolf, he managed to find a place among the Marauders and a home at Hogwarts. When all of that is taken from him, he has to look hard to find strength and purpose within himself. Remus is ultimately shaped by his experiences as a werewolf, as a Marauder, as an outcast, and as someone who lost everything he loved in a day. Remus spends his life coming to terms with his experiences, resolving his inner conflicts, and finding balance and peace with himself.

4. Quirinus Quirrell

Source

Quirinus Quirrell was a timid but brilliant student who developed an interest in the Dark Arts – partly out of curiosity and partly out of a deep desire to make a name for himself. He was always well versed in theory, but when he set out on an adventurous grand tour after completing his studies, he found that his knowledge was practically useless. He set out to find Lord Voldemort – and ultimately got more than he had bargained for – based on his desire for adventure and a thirst to prove himself.

5. Luna Lovegood

Source

Luna Lovegood is a pure soul. She knows exactly who she is and what she believes in and is unconcerned with the impression she leaves on the rest of the world. She pursues her goals and expresses her worldview without fear and inspires those around her to do the same. Luna is so extraordinary because she defies all expectations and resists all labels. She is adventurous in that she lives freely, expressively, and authentically, which is something that those around her struggle to do.

6. Andromeda Tonks

Source

Andromeda Tonks prefers to come to her own conclusions about the world around her. From an early age, she rejects the toxic, close-minded narrative her family provides and inspires her cousin Sirius to do the same. When her parents and sisters disown her, she builds her own support system; she marries a Muggle-born and openly supports the Order of the Phoenix in whatever way she can. Andromeda is ultimately defined by the choices she makes and the life she creates for herself.

7. Draco Malfoy

Source

Draco Malfoy is constantly searching for affirmation of his worth, which he finds in his wealth, blood status, and family name. When his father is imprisoned, Draco tries to find his place in Voldemort’s order but enters a terrifying new world where everything he thought gave him worth does not matter to anyone anymore. His experiences and choices ultimately allow him to become his own person and do things for himself.
