EXCLUSIVE: Dan Fogler Talks Queenie and Jacob and More in “Crimes of Grindelwald” at Comic-Con!

by Catherine Horvath · July 23, 2018

MuggleNet had the pleasure of meeting up with Fantastic Beasts star and comic book writer Dan Fogler at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend. After the spectacular events in Hall H the day before, we had a lot to discuss!

Between the entire cast making a surprise appearance – we can’t get over Jude Law – and Johnny Depp taking the stage as Grindelwald, we asked Dan what that exciting event was like for him. We discovered that the cast hadn’t seen the trailer yet either.

As insane as it was for you guys, it’s just mind-blowing for […] me. […] Just being on the stage and the vibrations of the stage and everything. And the sound. And oh my God. And we’re just seeing it for the first time too. […] We saw maybe an unfinished version of it, but wow.

The new Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer is a “geek fiasco,” as Ezra Miller described it, with surprises from the Mirror of Erised to Nicolas Flamel. We asked Dan what his favorite part was and which part fans should be the most excited about in anticipation of the movie.

Dan: I love the ending. I mean, I’m honored to have that whole last end part with Flamel, man. And then when they mention his name, everyone went nuts. Love that bit.

Cat: What part of the trailer should fans be most excited for?

Dan: I guess it’s that end part with Flamel. Because it’s dialogue. You get to see a piece of the movie and the pacing of it. And those scenes with Flamel are classic filmmaking.

After that cute kiss between Jacob and Queenie and the end scene in Jacob’s bustling bakery, we had to ask Dan about his character and what’s in store for Jacob in Crimes of Grindelwald. Don’t worry – Jacob and Queenie are still together! But their relationship is more complicated (as it goes with long-term relationships).

Cat: Are we going to get to see more of Jacob and Queenie together?

Dan: Yeah, I think so. Yeah. Yeah, the movie is darker. So like any relationship, they grow, they become more complex, and you’ll see them doing more relationship-type things in this, yes.

Cat: So getting along but also arguing? [laughs]

Dan: Yeah! I mean, it could be. Whatever comes with a complex relationship.

This complex relationship made us curious – how did these couples end up in Europe together when Jacob and the Goldstein sisters are from New York? How did Jacob remember his love? Dan confirmed that Jacob’s memory came back fully at the end of the last film, and this next film picks up with Jacob completely in the know and chasing down his love, Queenie.

It’s not explained exactly why, but he does have some recollection for sure, yeah. […] Everybody is chasing down their lover. So they go to crazy places to do it. All over the world.

We would be remiss if we didn’t ask Dan about working with Johnny Depp and his surprise appearance in Hall H. Dan confirmed that Jacob and Grindelwald do have a scene together.

Cat: Did you know [Johnny Depp’s appearance] was going to happen?

Dan: They told us about two seconds before, yeah, that he was coming. And we all said hi. And it was cool. Then he went on. It was wild. Yeah, they kept it pretty top secret. […] I was in one scene with him, and I got to hang out with him a little bit off camera, which was great, just shot the shit with him, basically. But that’s about it. I wish I had more scenes with him.

As the fandom continues to stir with all the surprises and casting decisions that Crimes of Grindelwald has to offer, we are looking forward to seeing what is in store for Jacob in his next adventure with Newt (and that new scary Chinese beast, the zouwu)! Be sure to read the full interview below. What is the most surprising thing Dan revealed for you? Tell us in the comments!

Alison Siggard: Hi!

Dan Fogler: Hi. You guys having a good con?

Alison and Cat Horvath: Yeah, are you having a good con?

Dan: Yeah. It's going well.

Alison: Good. What's your favorite part of cons? I always wonder.

Dan: Well, it depends on if I'm here with a movie or something. That Hall H thing, as insane as it was for you guys, it's just mind-blowing for a... well, for me. I can only speak for myself. Just being on the stage and the vibrations of the stage and everything. And the sound. And oh my God. And we're just seeing it for the first time too.

Cat: Oh, were you? The trailer?

Dan: Yeah. We saw maybe an unfinished version of it, but wow. Yeah.

Cat: Yeah. So what'd you think?

Dan: I was just amazed. I was sitting there like a little kid on the lip of the stage, looking up at it.

Alison: What was your favorite part of the trailer?

Dan: My favorite part, obviously, is... I love the ending. I mean, I'm honored to have that whole last end part with Flamel, man. And then when they mention his name, everyone went nuts. Love that bit.

Cat: We went nuts.

Alison: Yeah, we definitely did.

Dan: Yeah. And it got a good laugh. But then I guess the most intense was the swelling of the music in the middle when Grindelwald is escaping, essentially. Man. And then that connected to him actually being there.

Alison: Yeah, that was totally a surprise. That was...

Dan: Yeah, that was really intense. It got really quiet in there.

Alison: It did.

Cat: Did you know that was going to happen?

Dan: They told us about two seconds before, yeah, that he was coming. And we all said hi. And it was cool. Then he went on. It was wild. Yeah, they kept it pretty top secret.

Cat: Did you get to work a lot with him or was he in and out?

Dan: I was in one scene with him, and I got to hang out with him a little bit off camera, which was great, just shot the shit with him, basically. But that's about it. I wish I had more scenes with him.

Cat: And he's a hot commodity, so...

Dan: Yeah, I guess his time is very valuable. Yeah.

Alison: Yeah. So I guess speaking of the movie, then... We have lots of questions. First up, how is the bakery doing? We love the bakery.

Cat: Yeah. What happened to the bakery?

Alison: Is the bakery okay? [laughs]

Dan: As far as I know, it's doing very well. Yeah. I mean, he's not there manning it.

Alison: Oh, it's gotten that big! Wow!

Dan: Maybe! It's all conveyor belts now. Yeah, and his clothes are nicer. I don't know if that's Queenie's influence or that he's making some money. I think it's a little of both. I hope they start doing Kowalski Bakeries in the tours.

Alison: Me too. I wish they would put it in the park.

Dan: Yeah, in the park or something.

Cat: So they sell Fantastic Beasts merchandise and they sell Harry Potter food items, so they should start selling...

Alison: ... the Niffler bread.

Dan: I'm sure they will. I'm sure they will. It's delicious bread.

Cat: So you said "Queenie's influence." So are we going to get to see more of Jacob and Queenie together?

Dan: Yeah, I think so. Yeah. Yeah, the movie is darker. So like any relationship, they grow, they become more complex, and you'll see them doing more relationship-type things in this, yes.

Cat: So getting along but also arguing? [laughs]

Dan: Yeah! I mean, it could be. Whatever comes with a complex relationship.

Alison: We just haven't seen them together yet, and so it's like, "Oh no!" [laughs] "Not the best one!"

Cat: Yeah, we really loved that. That was one of our favorite parts of the first movie, was that relationship.

Dan: I know, I know.

Alison: It's the best. So that actually brings us, though... If they're having a complex relationship, does Jacob remember what happened [in the] last film? It's kind of hinted at at the end, but it was never confirmed, so...

Dan: I think he does have... yeah. It's not explained exactly why, but he does have some recollection for sure, yeah.

Alison: Okay. So there's not a period where he has to relearn everything.

Dan: Relearn everything! And he's reading this scroll before...

[Alison and Cat laugh]

Dan: "Ahh, okay, I'm back [unintelligible]." No, I think you see at the end of the first one. It comes flooding back to him.

Alison: Yeah. Okay. So how does Jacob end up in Paris, then, if... Last time we saw him in New York, does he...?

Cat: The bakery.

[Alison and Cat laugh]

Alison: Yeah, especially because he's from New York.

Dan: Yeah, everybody in this movie is... It's like a courtship. Everybody is chasing down their lover. So they go to crazy places to do it. All over the world.

Alison: Okay. That's an interesting way to get everyone moving. [laughs] What's your favorite new beast in the film? We've seen clips of some of them, but...

Dan: Well, you saw the trailer, right?

Cat: Yeah.

Dan: There's the zouwu, which Eddie talked about yesterday in the panel. Huge. Guess it's like a lion/dragon. Chinese.

Alison: Ooh, that's cool.

Dan: Yeah, yeah. It's that big furry thing.

Alison: Oh, the thing that jumps out. Oh, okay.

Dan: I think I'm pronouncing it incorrectly. It's Chinese.

Alison: How's it spelled?

Dan: Z-H-O-U-dash-O-U. Don't quote me, but that's, I guess, how it sounds.

Alison: Okay. Cool. I was wondering what that was. We were trying to figure out what it was.

Cat: And the strange cats with the eyes.

Alison: Yeah, with the big blue eyes.

Dan: Yeah, those are Egyptian cats. Yeah. They look Egyptian. I wasn't involved in that part of the movie, so I don't know what those are. But yeah, they were pretty funky.

Alison: Yeah, those were cool.

Cat: Does Jacob get to go back in the case?

Dan: Uhh, I can't say that.

Alison: Oh! [laughs]

Cat: Because his first trip through the case, he was...

Dan: I know, yeah.

Alison: That's my favorite part in that film, I think, is just walking through the case and...

Cat: The audience was with Jacob, then too, because we were all...

Alison: Yeah. And the soundtrack in that scene is gorgeous. I love that scene.

Dan: Yeah, he's the eyes of the audience there.

Cat: Out of the whole trailer - and you might not be able to say - what part of the trailer should fans be most excited for?

Dan: What part of the trailer?

Cat: Yeah. The trailer hints at a whole bunch of different things, so which one...?

Dan: You saw it, right?

Alison and Cat: Yes.

Dan: What part were you guys most excited about?

Cat: I think that the fandom itself focused on three things. The first one was the mirror.

Alison: That was the big one.

Cat: Dumbledore seeing Grindelwald in the Mirror of Erised. The second one would be Nicolas Flamel at the end.

Alison: Yeah, that was another big one.

Cat: And then the third one... If people didn't know already, but Credence is back and he's part of the story. That was only talked about very little when the first movie came out because they took out that whole scene where he gets on the boat, so it was more of a big question at the end of the first movie.

Dan: Right, whether he survives.

Cat: But now it's for sure. A lot of people are speculating if anyone dies. So if there's a part...?

Dan: In the trailer I loved the most? I guess it's that end part with Flamel. Because it's dialogue. You get to see a piece of the movie and the pacing of it. And those scenes with Flamel are classic filmmaking.

Cat: I guess, also, since you're at Comic-Con, what inspired you to get into comic-making?

Dan: I love comic books. I read them when I was a kid, and I made them when I was a kid with my brother. I used to draw them, and he used to write them, so it's just a joy for me to do it. And so I directed this movie called Hysterical Psycho, and that takes place in Moon Lake. I was like, "Shit, maybe I can write a bunch of stories that take place in Moon Lake throughout time." And so that became Moon Lake, my graphic novel series. And now I'm on Brooklyn Gladiator. I just keep on expanding my repertoire. So Moon Lake is horror/comedy; Brooklyn Gladiator is sci-fi. Yeah.

Cat: So if Warner Bros. ever petitions a Fantastic Beasts comic...

Alison: ... you're the one to do it!

Dan: Oh, I would love to! Yeah, hell yeah.

Cat: That would be awesome. That would be the illustrated version of Fantastic Beasts.

Dan: Great. Cool!

Cat: That'd be great stuff.

Alison: That would be really cool.

Cat: It looks like you're actually getting a line!

Dan: I'm actually getting a line, guys!

Cat: That's exciting!

Alison: We'll get out of the way.

Cat: Thank you so much for your time.

Dan: All right. Yeah, a pleasure!
