UPDATED: “Cursed Child” Melbourne Character Portraits Revealed

by Lucy O'Shea · January 18, 2019

UPDATE (January 22):

The Harry Potter and the Cursed Child official YouTube channel has released a video of the portrait session. As well as telling us more of what the cast has to say, the video contains up-close shots of the costumes. Check out the amazing attention to detail, such as the “I must not tell lies” scar on Gareth Reeves’ hand!

—

One of the things we look forward to with every new cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the character portraits. Now it’s time to get to know the cast of the Melbourne production with these newly released images.

First up is the Potters. Their character portrait shows Sean Rees-Wemyss (Albus Severus), Gareth Reeves (Harry Potter), and Lucy Goleby (Ginny Weasley) in character for the first time. Like any wizarding world fan, Rees-Wemyss revealed that the part of his costume he was most excited about was his wand:

The inner child in me who first fell in love with the books back in 2005, just sprang out and totally took over.

You won’t find a happier family than the Granger-Weasleys in their character portrait! Gyton Grantley takes on the role of Ron Weasley, with Paula Arundell portraying the character of Hermione Granger. Manali Datar joins the next generation of characters as Rose Granger-Weasley.

Nothing says Malfoy like a stern family portrait, and pictured below are Tom Wren (Draco Malfoy) and William McKenna (Scorpius Malfoy). Speaking about the family’s infamous blond hair, McKenna revealed that the wig really adds the finishing touch to Scorpius’s character:

You can create the character but once the wig and costume is on, it’s finally like ‘oh, hello! There he is. There’s Scorpius.’

A character portrait session wouldn’t be complete without the trio of the next generation!

The cast also recently moved from their rehearsal space to the Princess Theatre in Melbourne. Watch the video below to catch glimpses of the theater and hear what the cast think about their spectacular new home.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child officially opens on February 23 at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne. Tickets are available here.
