Fiona Shaw and Jessica Hynes Scoop BAFTA Television Awards

by Lucy O'Shea · May 13, 2019

The biggest night in British television took place on Sunday and saw two wizarding world alumnae walk away with coveted BAFTA mask statues.

Fiona Shaw (Petunia Dursley) won her first BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for her role as top MI6 agent Carolyn Martins in the BBC America drama Killing Eve. In her acceptance speech, Shaw joked that people have begun to suspect that she is a spy thanks to her role as Carolyn, which she called “probably the greatest pleasure of my life.”

In an interview shortly after winning the award, Shaw made sure to reassure people that she definitely isn’t a spy pretending to be an actress before reflecting on some advice given to her by fellow Potter alumna Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall).

Killing Eve went on to win a couple of other awards, including Best Actress for Jodie Comer (Villanelle) and Best Drama. Shaw accepted the latter award alongside her castmates and series creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The other wizarding world winner of the night was Jessica Hynes, who voiced Mafalda Hopkirk in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Hynes was awarded Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for her role as Emily Yates in There She Goes. Hynes got one of the biggest laughs of the night with a joke in her acceptance speech about owning a television:

Just sitting there watching all of those incredible programs makes me realize that we really, really should get a telly.

Hynes isn’t the only magical actor in There She Goes. The show features David Tennant (Barty Crouch, Jr.) as Hynes’ on-screen husband, Simon. In her acceptance speech, Hynes took a moment to thank her costar for being“a kind and brilliant person to work with.”

Congratulations to Fiona Shaw and Jessica Hynes on their BAFTA wins!
