Five Fabulous Wizarding World Style Moments: The Boys Edition

Can we all take a moment to appreciate the costumes in the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films? The spirit of my favorite wizarding world characters comes to life through these brilliantly-designed outfits. The costume designers created an idea of magical fashion that is both eccentric and timeless. In rewatches of the movies, I often catch myself imagining all the fun cosplay opportunities available for die-hard fans looking to turn heads at fan conventions.

In no particular order, here are five wizarding world ‘fits that are simply iconic. Do witches and wizards hold their own fashion week? If so, these ensembles would fit in perfectly on a runway. This article highlights male characters – be sure to stick around for the ladies’ list.

 

 

 

Newt’s Coat

 

 

Newt Scamander was a fresh face of the Wizarding World franchise, and costume designers had to make a statement with his costume in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016). I believe Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood knocked his look out of the park. Newt is such a lovable character, and his signature blue trench coat is just as adorable. Newt’s outfit reflects the sophistication of late 1920s style, but the bow tie and pops of color retain his penchant for all things whimsical. The whole outfit is professional and refined, yet reflects Newt’s quirky, playful personality. Of course, a little green Bowtruckle completes the look.

 

Ron’s Yule Ball Dress Robes

 

 

Is there a more memorable Harry Potter fashion moment than Ron’s Yule Ball dress robes? As a Potter fan who looks for book-to-screen accuracy, this imagining of Ron’s hand-me-downs was everything I hoped for. I know I’m supposed to think these robes are ugly, but I shamelessly love them. I have such an appreciation for vintage clothing, and the different textures and patterns in Ron’s robes are just wacky enough to be the perfect vintage find. The pink frills clash delightfully with an emerald green bow tie and a muted brown jacket that looks like it could be cut from grandma’s curtains. I could go on for days. Magnificence!

 

Xenophilius Lovegood’s Wedding Dress Robes

 

 

As someone who admires 70s-inspired fashion, I was drooling over Xenophilius Lovegood’s dress robes from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. The embroidered floral details in his mustard-colored jacket are absolutely gorgeous. What a bold choice to pair such a bold jacket with an even bolder, brighter dress shirt. Old Xeno knows how to clash his colors in style. The browns, pinks, and greens in the floral print add a hippy vibe to the look. If Xenophilius thought wearing the color yellow to a wedding would bring the couple good luck, he certainly went out of his way to bless Fleur and Bill. Don’t forget the finishing touch – a silver Deathly Hallows pendant.

 

Dumbledore… on Multiple Occasions

 

 

I couldn’t pick just one Dumbledore fashion moment, and I’m not sorry about it. From his suave, break-the-internet look in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald to his older years spent in cool blue silk (for Michael Gambon), lush red velvet (for Richard Harris), and a marvelously maintained white beard, you can’t deny – Dumbledore’s got style. I am always struck by Dumbledore’s accessories: the jewels that adorn his beard, his rings (minus the Horcrux, of course), his half-moon glasses, and his collection of really cool hats. I can only hope to live up to this dude’s sense of style when I’m his age. May Dumbledore’s legacy not only contain memories of all the accomplishments and groundbreaking magical feats and discoveries, but also the acknowledgment that he was always dressin’.

 

Hagrid’s Court Look

 

 

There is something so decidedly punk about showing up to court in a full fur coat and a polka-dotted tie. Hagrid’s ensemble for Buckbeak’s sentencing is a little ray of sunshine in an otherwise dark and gloomy situation. It inspires me to seize each and every moment as an opportunity for fashion. I am called to dig into the back of my closet and throw on that one shirt that I personally love but am too scared to wear for fear of judgment. Do it for Hagrid. Heck, do it for Buckbeak.
