Social Media Roundup: It’s Time to Save the Arts

by Lucy O'Shea · July 12, 2020

Welcome back to MuggleNet’s Social Media Roundup! It’s time to take a look at what some of the stars of the Wizarding World have been getting up to over the past few weeks, including campaigning to save the arts, sharing pictures of adorable pups, getting lockdown haircuts, and more!

The period of lockdown due to the outbreak of coronavirus has been difficult for everyone involved in the arts, from theater and film productions to stand-up comedy, galleries, and venues. Some Wizarding World alumni and current casts of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child have been showing their support for the #SavetheArts campaign.

Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown) showed her support for live comedy and arts venues by sharing some photos from her previous live shows.

I spent the day giving a workshop for @sohotheatre and lots of the people involved wanted to get into live comedy. It was pretty scary to talk about the future of performing and doing shows in this new Covid world but I tried to be positive and there is hope…. but so many venues need to be saved and looked after…. please #savelivecomedy 💜🙏💜🙏 Also I’m living with a stand up comedian who he needs to gig soon as he’s driving me slightly crazy….. gigging is a way of life for him, and now everything has stopped. #savelivecomedy 💜🙏💜🙏😫🙏😫

Katie Leung (Cho Chang) posted a slightly creepy behind-the-scenes photo.

To all professionals in the film, television, theatre, entertainment and arts world, join the challenge to post a photo of you in your job. Just a picture, no description. The goal is to flood social media with our profession. Copy the text and post a pic #SaveTheArts pic.twitter.com/8ovVrGbo5k

Chris Rankin (Percy Weasley) wrote to his MP about the struggles facing the arts and creative industries, which was then mentioned in the House of Commons in the United Kingdom.

So in a strange twist, today MY NAME was mentioned in the House of Commons referencing a letter I wrote to my local MP about the struggles the creative industries are facing in this current climate. Although this £1.57bn fund is incredibly welcome, it must be spent correctly.

Cast members of the currently postponed Cursed Child performances also shared their support for the #SavetheArts campaign, such as Thomas Aldrige (Ron Weasley) and James Howard (Draco Malfoy), who posted images of their performances in London.

I can’t tell you how much I’m missing playing Ron Weasley today. It actually hurts. Best job of my life @CursedChildLDN pic.twitter.com/rvDGc5MOD2

As well as supporting the arts through this difficult time, some alumni have been able to continue to promote their upcoming and newly released projects. A trailer for Matthew Lewis’s upcoming movie Baby Done was released with a release date of sometime later in 2020.

Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) has been promoting his newest movie, Scoob, which has now been given an at-home premiere in the UK.

In a change from normal agitation and cogitation, I’ve been publicizing #Scoob all week. Here’s an utterly indulgent thread of me talking about me. For completists and insomniacs. The interviewers are all models of journalistic philanthropy. I bless you all. From a distance. x pic.twitter.com/9y6SPTSx3b

Bonnie Wright hasn’t been promoting any new projects over the past few weeks, but she has been getting creative with her camcorder.

With the UK slowly emerging from lockdown, some parts of everyday life are returning to normal. Like many people across the country, Oliver Phelps (George Weasley) went straight to get a haircut.

People with pets will no doubt feel that they have been a source of comfort and companionship during the lockdown, and we’re sure it’s no different for our Wizarding World alumni. James Phelps (Fred Weasley) shared some photos of the adorable Tonto, who it seems still has to learn how to pose for a photo.

Today my lovely friend Georgia surprised me with this gorgeous portrait of Puff and look how fabulous it is!!! Thank you @petportraitsbygeorgia 😻 I can’t stop beaming back at it the way I do with Puffles 😽 ⁣ ⁣ Georgia has been absolutely slaying lockdown in a dazzling burst of vibrant creativity by leaning into her painting skills and has started a business for painting oil portraits of animals, and they are all absolutely stunning! 😺 it inspires me so much to see people take this moment to listen to the little voice of creativity that had previously been silenced by the constant grind 🌬🎨⁣ ⁣ If you would like a portrait of your companion animal (because why wouldn’t you?!) hit her up @petportraitsbygeorgia ! Love you Georgia, thank you!! 💛💛🧡💛 #Puff #art #Puffportrait

And finally, Tom Felton shared some puppy photos of his dog Willow, who has recently turned two years old. Happy Birthday, Willow!
