“Harry Potter” Characters Dress Up for Halloween

by Emily Lawrence · October 21, 2020

Hogwarts is gearing up for Halloween, probably one of the most important celebrations on the wizarding calendar. While you might have your costumes and plans ready, you may still be searching for some ideas. But not to worry – perhaps you’ll find inspiration in the choices some of our favorite characters came up with for their own Halloween festivities. Here’s some light-hearted pondering on the perfect costumes for these witches and wizards.

1. Remus, Sirius, and Tonks: Inside Joke

There’s nothing like a good inside joke for a group costume. And while some may see a costume based on a Muggle fairy tale about creepy wolves a bit in poor taste, Sirius and Tonks found it absolutely hilarious. And don’t worry, they both made it up to Remus by putting a generous stash of chocolate in his wicker basket. Remus might have preferred to be in something a little less loud than this shockingly red cape but was happy that at least Sirius was enjoying himself in his wolf costume. Tonks also enjoyed putting her own particular skillset to use, aging herself to play the part of the grandmother.

Luna and Ginny: Traditionally Spooky

Against all odds, Luna chose to go with the traditional costume route this year – not a whiff of Nargles or Crumple-Horned Snorkacks in sight! It goes to show that you can mix it up a bit, step outside your comfort zone, or try something completely different from your normal go-to. Luna chose to go with ghosts – and used her own House ghost as inspiration. Ginny joined in on this fun idea, honoring Nearly-Headless Nick with a half-axed neck makeup look and a variation of a Disillusionment Charm that made them almost but not quite see-through. It’s a perfect mix of innovation and tradition for this fun holiday.

3. Blaise Zabini: Glamorous and Fabulous

Blaise Zabini may seem reserved and quiet on the outside, but as the son of a fabulously wealthy mother and with a reputation for being rather vain, he sees Halloween as a good time to flaunt your fashion skills. This year, Blaise is going for a shockingly fabulous costume – sexy vampire. It may be a classic, but in a world that has actual vampires, you have to step it up a notch. For this look, Blaise has put together a deep V-neck shirt, long flowing trousers, and a bottle-green cape – even the haters were speechless!

4. Fred, George, and Lee: Group Look

Going with a group costume means that you can look ridiculous without fear. Fred, George, and Lee have taken this to the next level with a costume that both honors and pranks their favorite archnemesis: Filch. Filch and Mrs. Norris are an iconic pairing, but to bring their idea to the next level, Lee Jordan decided to go along with the theme as a mop, thereby bringing another element of fun to the costume. You can be sure that everyone thoroughly enjoyed this costume – everyone except Filch, of course.

Bust out your makeup brushes and wigs, because even during these trying times, Halloween can be whatever you make of it. From costumes that make you laugh to costumes that put you in the spotlight, Halloween is a perfect time to dress up and have fun with your friends. And who knows? Perhaps a Harry Potter-inspired costume will be the perfect addition to this Halloween, no matter how you spend it. What costumes do you think other characters would choose for this spooky fun holiday?
