National Poetry Month “Potter” Guide

by Tracy Dunstan · April 23, 2021

When day comes we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never-ending shade?

Were you inspired by Amanda Gorman’s words on Inauguration Day? Or do you quote names like Langston Hughes, Emily Dickinson, John Keats, Maya Angelou, and Walt Whitman as readily as you breathe? Then April, which is National Poetry Month, is the time of year for you. National Poetry Month was started in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets. Now in its twenty-fifth year, it is the largest literary celebration in the world.

So what do we suggest for a poetry-loving fan to help them celebrate National Poetry Month? Read on below.

1. Moleskine Limited Edition Harry Potter Notebook and Harry Potter Wand Pen

The first thing every poet needs is a notebook. This beautiful Moleskine Limited Edition Harry Potter Notebook comes in three different colors. We’re partial to the black Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-themed one, but you can also select one in red inspired by Quidditch and one in violet that has Dumbledore’s Army in mind. The front cover of each has a charming drawing and multiple blank pages just waiting to inspire. It’s part of a limited edition seven-part set that includes a section of the Marauder’s Map. Need a pen to go with it? Check out this wand replica set.

2. Fanfiction: Harry Potter’s Verse: Poetry of a Magician

Is reading rather than writing poetry more your style? Then we have some magic-themed poetry in mind. Fanfiction: Harry Potter’s Verse: Poetry of a Magician by Adam Smith is a great book of poetry to pick up if you’ve ever wondered what it was like for Harry after the Battle of Hogwarts. Smith takes the reader on an exploration of Harry’s life: his past, present, and future, including the birth of his children and how he feels about his parents’ deaths.

3. Truth About Magic: Poems

The Truth About Magic: Poems by Atticus takes a modern look at poetry. His collection has an adventurous look at magic and seeks to remind us that it is all around us.

4. Useless Magic: Lyrics and Poetry

Useless Magic: Lyrics and Poetry by Florence Welch looks at magic through the lens of the band Florence + the Machine. What’s great about this collection of poems is that it includes never-before-seen poetry from the band.

5. Harry Potter-inspired Poetry

What is your favorite poem from the books? Is it the Sorting Hat song or perhaps the mermaid song from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire?

Come seek us where our voices sound
We cannot sing above the ground
An hour long you’ll have to look
To recover what we took
Your time’s half gone so tarry not
Lest what you seek stays here to rot.” (GoF 463)

There are a lot of fun prints and posters out there related to the Sorting Hat poem for each House. This tin print focuses specifically on Ravenclaw and has a beautiful vintage design. Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin aren’t left out as well, because there are also prints available to represent each of those Houses.
