The 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards Went Off with a Bang

by Aly Kirk · September 20, 2021

The 73rd annual Emmy Awards were, in one word, a smash. So many talented creators and actors came together in Los Angeles, California, to award the prestigious golden statues to the most outstanding TV shows and cast.

Shows like Bridgerton, The Crown, Gangs of London, The Mandalorian, The Queen’s Gambit, and so many more had cast members in attendance who we all know and love.

The Crown took home some well-deserved trophies by the end of the night.

  • Outstanding Drama Series
  • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series – Olivia Colman
  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series – Josh O’Connor
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – Tobias Menzies
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – Gillian Anderson
  • Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series – Jessica Hobbs (Episode: “War”)
  • Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series – Peter Morgan (Episode: “War”)
  • Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series
  • Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (One Hour)
  • Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series

Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange) was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress, and while Gillian Anderson has enough talent to reach back to The X-Files, some Potter fans may call this a snub.

The Queen’s Gambit, which saw widespread success and love from viewers, claimed its own share of Emmys.

  • Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series
  • Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie – Scott Frank
  • Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More)
  • Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie
  • Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie
  • Outstanding Period Costumes
  • Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie
  • Outstanding Period and/or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)
  • Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score)
  • Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special
  • Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie

Harry Melling (Dudley Dursley) acted his heart out in The Queen’s Gambit, showing a much kinder side of his acting abilities, opposite to those that made Harry Potter miserable for all those years at the Dursleys’ home.

Everyone’s favorite Star Wars spin-off, The Mandalorian, collected seven awards.

  • Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour)
  • Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup
  • Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score)
  • Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour)
  • Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie
  • Outstanding Stunt Coordination
  • Outstanding Stunt Performance

Natalia Tena (Nymphadora Tonks) portrayed Xi’an, a rough-and-tumble criminal in Chapter 6: The Prisoner of The Mandalorian.

Those who follow high society will be pleased to hear that Bridgerton claimed an award.

  • Outstanding Period and/or Character Hairstyling

Freddie Stroma (Cormac McLaggen) played Prince Friedrich in Bridgerton and probably deserved his own award for the hair he pulled off in the series.

Lovecraft Country, the horror series based on Matt Ruff’s book of the same name, won two Emmys.

  • Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama – Courtney B. Vance
  • Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour)

Wunmi Mosaku (Beryl in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) portrays the lovely Ruby Baptiste in Lovecraft Country, and the show is sure to scare your socks off.

There are still some very notable series that brought home an Emmy from the ceremony.

  • Outstanding Comedy Series – Ted Lasso
  • Outstanding Variety Sketch Series – Saturday Night Live
  • Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) – Hamilton
  • Outstanding Variety Talk Series – Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
  • Outstanding Competition Program – RuPaul’s Drag Race

A full list of nominees and winners can be found online. What were your favorite shows from the last year? Let us know!
