Awards Roundup: A February Full of Victories

by Elyse Maupin-Thomas · March 5, 2023

2023 has already seen a good number of awards come the way of some of our Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts favorites, and February certainly kept pace. Since the February 15 Kidscreen Award win for Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, even more alumni and crew from the Wizarding World have received honors and recognitions for their considerable talents.

“There’s more to Hollywood than young stars in superhero spandex,” reports the AARP Entertainment section, and AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards recognizes the films and shows that prove just that. Among the winners this year was Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, which stars the incomparable Dame Emma Thompson (Sybill Trelawney). The film, which addressed decidedly mature themes from aging to body acceptance, earned accolades in the Best Grownup Love Story category.

Next up were the 2023 BAFTA Awards, which were announced on February 19. The Banshees of Inisherin earned four awards in various categories, including Outstanding British Film and Original Screenplay. The film stars Wizarding World alumni Colin Farrell (Percival Graves) and Brendan Gleeson (Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody). Guillermo del Toro’s Pinnochio also scooped a win in the Animated Film category. David Bradley (Argus Filch) and Ron Perlman (Gnarlack) voice Geppetto and Podesta, respectively, while Alexandre Desplat composed the score of the film.

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards also recognized The Banshees of Inisherin. The film won three awards this time, including Best Screenplay. Brendan Gleeson was also honored specifically with an award in the Best Supporting Actor category.

The 12th AACTA International Award winner for Best Supporting Actor in Film is Brendan Gleeson for The Banshees Of Inisherin 🙌

The International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA) Awards announced its list of winners on February 23. Of the musical talents who have long enchanted the Wizarding World, two former Harry Potter composers earned special recognition this year. John Williams, who produced the scores of the first three Potter films, won Best Original Score for a Drama Film for his work on The Fabelmans. Alexandre Desplat, of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Part 2 fame, earned an award for Best Original Score for an Animated Film for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinnochio.

That wasn’t the last of the recognitions for Pinnochio. The movie was celebrated at this year’s Producer’s Guild Awards with a win in the Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures category. Daniel Radcliffe’s recent biopic, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, received an award as well for Outstanding Producer of Televised or Streamed Motion Pictures.

Finally, we closed out the month with the 25th Costume Designer Guild Awards (CDGA) on February 27. The award for Excellence in Contemporary Television went to Colleen Atwood and Mark Sutherland for the Wednesday episode “Wednesday’s Child Is Full of Woe.” You may recall the pair’s work previously on the Fantastic Beasts films. Jany Temime, who designed costumes for six of the Harry Potter films, was lauded for her talent in costuming the cast of HBO’s House of the Dragon. She won the award for Excellence in Sci-Fi / Fantasy Television for her work on the episode “The Heirs of the Dragon.”
