New Chocolate Frog Card Features Beatrix Bloxam

by Elyse Maupin-Thomas · July 10, 2023

Great news, chocolate fans – a fresh excuse to invest in some sweet inventory is hopping your way. A new wizard card is now available for purchase, making it the first new addition of 2023. And while the previous release featured an early herbologist, this one honors a famous wizarding world writer.

Pictured holding a quill, children’s author Beatrix Bloxam is emblazoned on this latest collectible card, which is currently available only in milk chocolate boxes. Unlike the Chocolate Frogs that accompany her card – which are, of course, as delectable as they are enchanting – Beatrix Bloxam is renowned for a sense of sweetness that can best be described as sickly. The author, who lived from 1794 to 1910, had somewhat high-minded ideas regarding children’s literature. She even rewrote content she found distasteful, such as some of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which was a central text in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Bloxam described the purpose of children’s stories as “filling the pure minds of our little angels with healthy, happy thoughts, keeping their sweet slumber free of wicked dreams and protecting the precious flower of their innocence.” If reading that quote left you a bit queasy, you’re not alone. Bloxam’s children’s books, including her series Toadstool Tales, were banned due to the nausea and vomiting their saccharine contents caused in their readers.

The new wizard cards can be found for a limited time in boxes marked with a gold sticker. The new cards have the lenticular feature that lends to that magical visual effect and are still selling for $14. They can be purchased online or picked up in person at one of the many wizarding shops around the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort.
