Win a full set of the “Harry Potter” novels as part of World Book Day!

by Sophie Reid · March 6, 2014

It’s World Book Day in the UK today, which promotes and celebrates reading, particularly for children and young people. To celebrate the day, schools and bookshops put on events and competitions to celebrate all things fictional. It wouldn’t be a celebration of great children’s literature without the Harry Potter books being involved in some way.

To begin, World Book Day ran a poll, titled “Writes of Passage,” in which

“young people and adults nominated the books that have rocked their worlds, to help us create the ultimate list of 50 BOOKS that will change YOUR life and keep you reading.”

The final list of 50 books “that will change your life” was announced today. Unsurprisingly, the Harry Potter series features among the books, in the category “books that transport you,” alongside Percy Jackson (Rick Riordan), Northern Lights (The Golden Compass, Philip Pullman), The Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkien), and others.

The series was clearly popular with the public since Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is number four on the list of the top ten nominated books. The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, tops the list, followed by The Fault in Our Stars (John Green) and To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee).

To see a full list of the fifty books and find out more about the “Writes of Passage” list, visit the website here, where you can download a printable list and poster.

That’s not the only Harry Potter-related news surrounding World Book Day. To celebrate the day, Bloomsbury, the publisher of the novels, and the Sentinel have teamed up in order to offer a Harry Potter boxed set of novels!

To enter the competition and win the Signature edition books, fill out the form here, by answering a simple question. Unfortunately, this competition is only open to those in the UK and Ireland.

To find out more about World Book Day itself, visit the website here.

Does the Harry Potter series deserve its place on this list? What books would you have nominated for the list?
