A new era has begun – WELCOME to MuggleNet 3.0!

April Fools!

In honor of Fred (RIP) and George’s birthday,ย we at MuggleNet decided to go all out with our April Fools’ Day prank this year. So no, we are not shutting down altogether – we are just shutting down the old MuggleNet! Just like Fawkes, we are reborn from the ashes as we are proud to welcome you to the new MuggleNet.

In order to bring the fandom into the post-Potter books and films era, we decided that it was time to completely overhaul MuggleNet. So over the last year, our staff of volunteers has worked tirelessly to compile, organize, and revitalize the past fifteen years of MuggleNet. It was spread over thousands of web pages and can now be found in a condensed, mobile-friendly, easy-to-navigate format! In the end, we compiled, edited, transferred, and updated over 8,500 pages, 8,000 news posts dating back to 2002, and created many new sections such as cast pages, special projects, charity information, fandom projects, a rare Harry Potter books section, and a brand new Fantastic Beasts information hub.

In the past, MuggleNet focused on the wizarding world from the primary standpoint of the Harry Potter books and films, but the world and fandom is changing. The books have all been written, the films have all been released, and while we will always continue to love and support the Harry Potter franchise in its entirety, we also realize that we have an opportunity to expand our connection on the Internet with all of theย Potter fans. With the imminent release of the Fantastic Beasts film trilogy, the expansion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Japan, and Hollywood, Muggle Quidditch, Pottermore, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, Harry Potter: The Exhibition, and so much more, we are positioning ourselves to continue to be your NUMBER ONE source for all things related to the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, and beyond.

The redesign took approximately 1,150 man hours by over 50 volunteers and took place over the course of twelve months. We are extremely proud and happy with the results – and hope that you are, too!

So without further ado, welcome to MuggleNet 3.0!

P.S. – In the spirit of this exciting news, we would appreciate your discretion on the matter. Much like Deathly Hallows back in 2007, please don’t spoil the surprise for others. Thank you!

    • We had to change it up a little bit this year, but still one of our favorite days to have fun.

  • I always love your April Fool’s jokes! And new website design looks really cool. ๐Ÿ™‚ MuggleNet has always been my primary source for Harry Potter information, and I’m very grateful for all the work that all of you put into the website.

I must say, the new design, if this is real and to stay, is great. It’s clean, it’s modern, it looks like a blog/web page in 2014. Well done on the design all around.

  • PS

I can’t access the mugglecast page… I hope it’s because its April Fools..

  • Cathy Peterson

Good one! And I really like the new look of the site. Nice and clean looking.

  • Alissa Roy

Totally got me, really freaked me out! Feeling a lot better now! Unless this a REALLY elaborate joke and at the end of the day you are like “Just kidding… We are really taking it away…” Please don’t do that!

    • It took a year to create this, so there is NO chance of it going away. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • ImperfectPepper

I love the new look! But I have to say, it can’t compare to Melissa and Emerson’s marriage…

  • Kate Drummond

I check every year just for your April Fool’s joke. ๐Ÿ™‚ Well done on this one.

  • DiamondAvatar

I hope you give it a more Potter-y look.

  • oh my god I saw it this morning and have been thinking about all day… I come home to find this… thank god!!! ๐Ÿ™‚
I love the new look and some of the new features are really cool. Just a little suggestion which a few others have brought up, and I don’t mean to be mean as I know this must have taken a lot of work but I reckon it cool look and a feel a bit more Potter if it just had I dunno… maybe a header with potterness all over?? I don’t know, and I’m not complaining, this looks great as is too. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Cheers!

New design is in the works! ๐Ÿ™‚

I like how clean the design is, but I don’t like how it’s lost its character. Not a single picture of anything Potter-related outside of the content. Though, I feel this is nothing new. The more people surf the web on their phones, the more website design becomes less of a priority. I hate what mobile web has done to web design. If it’s not stripped down, plain designs, it’s text-based, gigantic navigation. I understand that Mugglenet has to change, but this just feels a little regressive, rather than progressive. It needs some of its character back. But, I’ll continue to come back here, of course. ๐Ÿ™‚

I agree. They could have kept a Potter focused website, albeit a scaled down and fresh one, and had this look for mobile compatibility only. It just looks like any old blog made on the cheap, and does not represent the world’s #1 HP site which I’ve been visiting for over ten years. I too, however, will continue to visit as Mugglenet is awesome ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Kat

Don’t worry, we are working on some new design elements. A lot will be changing over the coming weeks!

    • We are still in the middle of creating our new awesome design. It just wasn’t ready for launch. Thanks for the feedback and your patience!

  • simplyshiny

    Loving it, loving it!

Cool! I was starting to get a bit annoyed with the structure and design of MuggleNet lately. I think I even told you so on at least one occasion – little did I know that you were already working on it! I haven’t clicked through all the sections yet – obviously, since that’s gonna take a few weeks – but it looks great. Neat design, I like the simplicity. The only thing I miss is the variety of designs for the top frames we used to be able to choose from. I suppose you made that decision for a reason (and since I have just been praising the simple design, I think I know why) but I still miss them. To me, they were something very particular to MuggleNet. Maybe they could come back one day in a new form…? Anyway, congratulations! Really well done!

    • Thank you very much for the kind words. The new design is in the making. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Tonks58

I was expecting it this year so you didn’t fool me with the whole shutting down the site thing… But is this Mugglenet 3.0 thing real? Where are Dylan’s awesome top designs??? It doesn’t even look like Mugglenet anymore….

    • We are in the middle of creating a new modern design. Unfortunately, it wasn’t finished for launch. Thanks for your patience and enjoy the rest of the site. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • kneazles

What happened to the MuggleCast page??? I understand you are rearranging the website, but where did the transcripts go? And the ability to listen to the shows online or download them directly without itunes?

3.0 is more user-friendly but where is the banner?! Without the banners, 3.0 does not feel like mugglenet. Please bring them back!

    • We are still creating our new banner. It will be awesome when it’s done, but it takes time. Thanks for your patience. ๐Ÿ™‚
