Gryffindor Tower #14: Who’s Bewitching Who? Romance in the Harry Potter Books

I have so much to say…about Gryffindor Tower, MuggleNet and their fans, my novel, and Harry Potter, but I shall save that until after the topic at hand. As my copy of OotP is still MIA, I offer you this week’s topic, the romance of Harry Potter. I hope you all enjoy!

Ginny Weasley

Well, you all think it will be Harry and Ginny, correct? I disagree, at least, as of now. My guess is that it will be none other than Ginny Weasley and our quiet-turned-buttkicking sixth year, Neville Longbottom. Before you say I’m wrong, I offer two pieces of evidence. First, Neville asked Ginny to the Yule Ball in fourth year. Why? He could have gone alone, there’s no doubt about it, and knowing him, he probably would have, had he not liked Ginny. Second, and more importantly. When Umbridge and the Inquisitorial Squad catches Harry and company talking to Sirius in OotP, Neville, who was not part of the distraction, is captured. Why? Because, even though his friends were being ambushed, he ran to the aid of only one person: Ginny. It’s not much, but I see it happening sooner or later.

Hermione Granger

Okay, I must admit it. I have said before that I think Hermione and Ron will be together. I don’t believe that anymore. But, because my friend and writer of the Pensieve, Josh Smith, and I both had the same thought after reading OotP: Ron and Hermione are already together. It makes perfect sense. They spent all that time together, they were prefects together, they must have talked often about Harry’s behavior in year five…face it, they’ve had alot of time to work on a relationship. And, there’s no doubting it, Ron’s more mature in book five. And I am aware that Ron reacted rather oddly when Hermione kissed him, but who said that they had to have kissed before?

Cho Chang

NO ONE (I hope).

Luna Lovegood

And this, my friends, is the big one. Luna likes Ron, correct? Wrong. She stares at him, but she’s weird, so it’s not that odd. She sings “Weasley Is Our King” under her breath, but again, she’s about as normal as Michael Jackson. As a matter of fact, if Michael Jackson and the crazy witch from Robin Hood: Men in Tights had a child, I don’t think even he would be as irregular as Luna. So, who is it that Luna’s shown real affection for? Well, let’s see. She did make a comment about being under the mistletoe with someone…which, until she made the statement about nargles, was pretty normal. Later, she had a heart-to-heart with a certain someone while looking for her missing effects the night before the end of term. That person even admitted that he felt bad for her, and seemed to be much more open to talking to her about what was on his mind. I think, that if he doesn’t die at the end, Harry will end up with Luna, who is not nearly as odd as everyone thinks.

The things that don’t point to a Harry-Hermione relationship

Well, you all told me about some things that happened in OotP that would suggest Harry and Hermione will be together. He pulled her back when Grawp tried to grab her. He pulled her down when the centaurs attacked Umbridge. He pulled her out of the way when the centaurs attacked Grawp. He felt horrible when he thought she was dead.

I want you to understand something, because I said it before, and no one seems to understand it yet. Harry and Hermione are best friends. Now, if he is only saving her life because he is in love with her, I want you to think about this little scenario I’ve pieced together about one of my best female friends, Lindsey, and myself, and tell me if it makes sense.

(Lindsey is walking across the street, while Dan sits with his friend Kevin, waiting for her to reach them)
Dan: Um, Kevin, that car is coming pretty fast up the street. I think it’s going to hit Lindsey.
Kevin: Yeah, maybe we should do something…try to save her…(Kevin sees an odd look on Dan’s face). What’s wrong?
Dan: Well, it’s just that…I don’t know…I’m not really in love with her, you know? I mean, she is my best friend…but it’s not like I want to marry her, right?
Kevin: Yeah, I see your point. Oh well. This should be interesting.
(The car, driven by Josh Smith, hits Lindsey, who is immediately nothing more than a puddle of goo on the pavement)
Dan: Wow, that sucked. Should I have tried to save her?
Kevin: Naw, like you said, it’s not like you fancied her. Speaking of fancy, do ya fancy a game of poker?
Dan: (looking at the Lindsey goo for a moment, then turning to Kevin) Yeah. Let’s go.

Anyhoo, those are my ideas for relationships. I hope you enjoyed them!

A week tomorrow, I will be returning to college, the wonderful University of Scranton, to begin my junior year. One of the apprehensions about going back is, of course, Gryffindor Tower. Although it wasn’t always weekly, it was meant to be, and I absolutely loved the constant conversation between all of the Gryffindor Tower fans and me. You all are the greatest group of people a writer could ever have the pleasure of interacting with. I have had such a blast, answering emails, talking to fans online, and writing for Emerson, Jamie, and the rest of the MuggleNet staff every week. I encourage you all to keep emailing me, even though Gryffindor Tower will now be returning to a bi-weekly format. I had such a great time, and I can’t thank you all enough for it. Emerson and the crew are wonderful, but all of us, from Emerson, Damon, and Jamie, to Josh and I, would be nothing without all of you. It’s been a great summer, and although I won’t be writing every week, trust me, I’m not going anywhere!

Thank you all for the wonderful feedback on my novel. Unfortunately, with the switch of servers for MuggleNet email, I lost many emails. If you would like to get a copy of the first chapter of my novel, or just send me an email, you can still reach me here. I ask you all, please, to send ALL THEORIES AND ALL PREDICTIONS here. Well, sorry this was short, but as I don’t have a copy of my OotP, I didn’t have much to say. I didn’t see any movies or read any books this week, but those features will return in two weeks. Oh, and by the way, I’m trying to figure out a way to make Gryffindor Tower more interactive…contests and such…but as I have no money to buy prizes, I’m still working on it…any ideas for interactive GTs can be sent to my general email.

Again, thank you all so much for a great summer. I had a blast, and I hope you all did too. Take care, and, until next time, I hope to catch ya all in the common room, in everyone’s favorite place at Hogwarts: Gryffindor Tower.
