JK Rowling working on crime novel?

The Associated Press is reporting that our favorite author may be working on a crime novel. The information comes from novel writer Ian Rankin, who is a neighbor of Jo's.

“My wife spotted her writing her Edinburgh criminal detective novel,” the newspaper, which was available late Saturday, quoted Rankin as saying.

Rankin, famous for his own police novels set in the historic Scottish city, said he had not discussed the project with Rowling personally, and declined to reveal how he had learned about her plans.

“It is great that she has not abandoned writing or Edinburgh cafes,” Rankin said.

As the article mentions, Jo has said she will work on new stories in the future (and confirmed that a young children's book is halfway complete at a charity reading back in August 2006). We'll keep you updated as we know more, but consider this a big rumor for now. If she were to release a new book, it likely won't be for a while. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!
