“Harry Potter” star Dame Maggie Smith honors a sick boy’s Make-A-Wish dream

by Keith Hawk · Published August 3, 2012 · Updated January 19, 2017

Dame Maggie Smith – who portrayed Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films – made a wish come true for Evan, who is nine years old and living with a twisted cervical spine and Heptoblastoma (liver cancer), when she agreed to meet him at a local hotel in Cambridge as part of the UK Make-A-Wish program.

Dame Maggie Smith arrived at the hotel bearing gifts for the youngster, including his favorite Cadbury caramel chocolate and a baby cactus plant, and spent two hours chatting to him over afternoon tea.

Evan’s mother stated, “The best thing about Evan’s wish was how much genuine care and concern Maggie showed for all of us. She was empathetic and showed real interest in Evan; we had her attention 100%. The wish took place exactly a year after Evan was told he was in remission, so it was an incredibly special celebration.”

Dame Maggie Smith is also a cancer survivor and a very special woman indeed!

Thanks to Jeanna for the tip!
