Five of Our Favorite Fandom Pairings: Severus Snape Edition

by Rachael Dechert · September 17, 2015

Fan Fiction is a wonderful medium where authors can take some of the most hated characters and make them into someone who is likable. Severus Snape is not seen in a good light in the books. Many fan fiction authors believe that this is because the books are written from the perspective of Harry Potter, and he is simply misunderstood. Others believe that he is one of the worst characters in the series. No matter how you feel about him, he is clearly one of the most interesting characters to write about. Here are some of the fandom’s favorite pairings for him. This article is not Snape approved, but we did allow him to insert some GIFs that show his feelings.

1. Severus/Lily

Snily is very popular with Snape-lovers and is the only Snape-approved pairing on this list. Severus’s feelings for Lily changed his life for the better. They caused him to switch sides and help protect Harry. He loved her until his last breath. Their love never had a chance in the books, but in fan fiction they can finally be together. Always.

2. Severus/Remus

Snupin is a fascinating pairing because a huge amount of character development needs to go into a story where these two get together. Severus and Remus went through school pulling pranks on each other. One of these pranks led to Severus almost being killed, and this caused him to hate Remus and the Marauders even more that he already did. We know very little about the years between Lord Voldemort’s defeat and Harry starting Hogwarts, so anything is possible.

3. Severus/Hermione

Snamione is a pairing based on wit. Severus is a Potions Master and an expert in Dark Arts. Hermione is the best student in her year. They both need to be with someone who can keep up with them intellectually, and I can see them staying up for hours debating new theories. Both are very passionate and stubborn, which means that they would constantly be challenging each other to learn new things and defend their ideas. These are all things that the Snamione shippers find most important in relationships.

4. Severus/Lucius

Snucius is one of my favorite pairings. I love the idea of these two together, and I am not alone. Lucius and Severus make such a beautiful couple. They have many things in common: Both are Slytherins, Death Eaters, clever, powerful, and passionate. The fan fiction based on this pairing is amazingly detailed and well written.

5. Severus/Harry

If asked to describe their OTP in one word a Snarry shipper would say angst. This is not a happy pairing, although it can have its fluffy moments. Severus dedicated most of his adult life to making sure that Harry remained alive. All of those years spent watching him couldn’t solely be because of Lily, could it? How would Harry get over his cruel treatment at Snape’s hands? Through fan fiction, Snarry shippers can explore the answers to these questions.

Honorable Mention: Severus/Gilderoy

I was unaware that this pairing existed until I wrote this list. After 10+ years in the fandom, I was very surprised that there was a pairing that I haven’t read, so I set out to fix that. This ship is very intriguing. I couldn’t imagine these two together, but after reading several stories I realized that this pairing is a lot more popular than I thought it was.
