Fans Give Their Initial Thoughts on “Cursed Child”

by Callum Lloyd Thomas, Callum Lloyd Thomas · June 8, 2016

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few months, you will know that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child finally opened for previews last night at the Palace Theater in London. As the 1,500 audience members left the show, they were each given badges asking them to “keep the secrets,” so in keeping with that tradition, the following audience reactions will be completely spoiler-free. Alas, it’s safe to say that the lucky fans who got to watch Part 1 last night were very pleased indeed!

Raam Suresh, a student from Singapore, said,

I can’t wait for the next one. I’m hoping it’s the first of many more.

While Katie Bitter, who traveled to London from Washington, DC, said,

I was a little worried it wouldn’t meet my high expectations, but tonight was absolutely amazing. It didn’t feel like a preview at all.

Natalie from Ohio was particularly fond of one character,

I really liked the character of Scorpius Malfoy and seeing Harry, Ron, and Hermione grown up. I think they did the magic on stage really well.

Meanwhile another fan, Julia, from Milan, also reacted positively, saying,

It was really cool. I wish they would do all seven books in the theater.

Some members of the audience took to Twitter to express their satisfaction with the show, calling it “brilliantly staged” and “potentially the best thing I have ever seen.” High praise indeed!

No spoilers OBVIOUSLY but wow. Brilliantly staged, so well acted, actually…really, really good when I worried it wouldn't be #CursedChild

The only disappointment about @HPPlayLDN #CursedChild is that I can't reread it over & over like a book. Stunning performances. @jk_rowling

Potter Quote

“I suggest you both go up to Madam Pomfrey. She is already tending to Miss Fawcett, of Ravenclaw, and Mr. Summers, of Hufflepuff, both of whom decided to age themselves up a little too. Though I must say, neither of their beards is anything like as fine as yours.”
