Matthew Lewis Teases Character Details for Season 5 of “Ripper Street”

by Gayane Kaligian · June 22, 2017

We’ve loved Matthew Lewis in Ripper Street since he joined the show in 2015. His character, Sgt. Samuel Drummond, is a force of technological progress in H Division, introducing his coworkers to new methods of crime-solving every day. After a shocking conclusion to Season 4, the new season promises incredible thrills – especially, says Matthew, for Drummond.

Now that Jedediah Shine is in charge of H Division, Sgt. Drummond faces a new sort of policing that he doesn’t quite agree with. He’s in a morally gray area, caught between his dream of a new era of police work and the new boss’s orders. Matthew hinted at a fascinating character arc:

Without giving too much away, he’s going to get put on the spot, and choices are going to have to be made. What I will say about Drum is that he’s always believed he’s doing the right thing. You can call him ambitious, and he’s always trying to do the right thing. But unfortunately with the way the people that are pulling the strings are incredibly powerful and incredibly manipulative. And Drum is going to trip up over the next six episodes. He’s going to make mistakes, but he’ll also still be trying to do the right thing. And we’re gonna see how difficult that becomes for him.

Since this is the last season, Matthew’s character is certainly in for a wild ride. We’re excited to see where it takes him and where Matthew’s career will go after this!

You can watch the new season of Ripper Street on Amazon Video.
