Anthony Boyle Nominated for Joe Allen Best West End Debut Award

by Gayane Kaligian · August 10, 2017

Anthony Boyle brought Scorpius Malfoy to life in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in his West End debut last year, and he’s getting some of the recognition he deserves. Anthony is nominated in the Joe Allen Best West End Debut category at the Stage Debut Awards, alongside Star Wars star John Boyega (Woyzeck) and six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald (Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill).

Anthony, while fairly new on the scene, has received a number of other awards for his role: He was nominated in the Emerging Talent category at the 2016 Evening Standard Theatre Awards and won the Best West End Debut Award at the 2016 West End Frame Awards. He will also be joining the rest of the original Cursed Child cast on Broadway next year, so there could even be a Tony nod in his future!

The Stage Debut Awards celebrate actors and creatives making their professional stage debuts in Manchester, Belfast, Bristol, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Chichester, Liverpool, Derby, Stratford-upon-Avon, and London. Actors as young as 16 are on the shortlist, which also features some well-known names like Amber Riley (Dreamgirls, Glee) and Tony nominee Andy Karl (Groundhog Day). Judge Lynn Gardner gave her opinion on the awards:

A unique chance to celebrate emerging theater talent. With so much great theater taking place across the country, we have a really strong and diverse set of nominees – from young actors making their debuts in small fringe theaters to designers, writers and directors at major regional and national producing theaters. It’s great to see such a great range of talented theatermakers and gives cause for great optimism about the future of theater in the UK.

The West End Debut category is the only one to be decided by the public vote, so you can vote for your favorite actor now on the Stage website. Mark Shenton, the associate editor of the Stage, remarked on the unique nature of this category:

While the other categories in [t]he Stage Debut Awards only recognize complete newcomers, the Joe Allen Best West End Debut Award is a chance to celebrate talent making their mark in the West End for the first time. We have a really great shortlist that ranges from genuine newcomers like Anthony Boyle, who made his professional debut in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, to Audra McDonald, a legend on Broadway making her belated West End debut in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. This is also the only category that will be put to the public vote, but whoever they chose will be a worthy winner.

We’re certainly rooting for Anthony to win, despite a category filled with incredibly talented actors. Make sure to vote here before the winners are announced on September 17. You can learn more about the Stage Debut Awards here. Also, don’t forget to set your calendars for Cursed Child‘s opening on Broadway on April 22, 2018.

The Stage Debut Awards announces 2017 shortlist

The Stage today announces the shortlist for its inaugural The Stage Debut Awards. The awards recognise the best breakthrough actors and creatives in theatre. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at 8 Northumberland Avenue, London on September 17, 2017.

First-time performances from actors as young as 16 and established stars making their theatre debuts such as The Feeling's Dan Gillespie Sells are among the nominations. Meanwhile in The Joe Allen Best West End Debut category, nominees include Star Wars’ John Boyega, Glee’s Amber Riley, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s Anthony Boyle. The shortlist highlights the breadth of new talent on and off stage with categories celebrating performers, writers, composers and directors. The shortlist includes actors and creatives working in Manchester, Belfast, Bristol, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Chichester, Liverpool, Derby, Stratford-upon-Avon and London.

Lyn Gardner, The Stage's associate editor and one of the judges, said: "The Stage Debut Awards are a unique chance to celebrate emerging theatre talent. With so much great theatre taking place across the country, we have a really strong and diverse set of nominees – from young actors making their debuts in small fringe theatres to designers, writers and directors at major regional and national producing theatres. It’s great to see such a great range of talented theatremakers and gives cause for great optimism about the future of theatre in the UK."

The Joe Allen Best West End Debut category is the only award to have the winner decided by public vote, and voting is now open. The Joe Allen Best West End Debut celebrates a first performance in London’s West End (rather than their professional debut). The public can vote on the winner here.

The shortlist for The Joe Allen Best West End Debut is:

John Boyega, Woyzeck

Anthony Boyle, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Andy Karl, Groundhog Day

Audra McDonald, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill

Andrew Polec, Bat Out of Hell

Imogen Poots, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Amber Riley, Dreamgirls

Charlie Stemp, Half A Sixpence

Mark Shenton, The Stage's associate editor, joint lead critic and one of the judges, said: "While the other categories in The Stage Debut Awards only recognise complete newcomers, the Joe Allen Best West End Debut Award is a chance to celebrate talent making their mark in the West End for the first time. This is also the only category that will be put to the public vote, but whoever they choose will be a worthy winner."

Shortlisted nominees will be invited to an invitation-only ceremony in central London on September 17, 2017, when the winners will be revealed.
