“Cursed Child” Stars on Magic, Friendship, and Auditions

by Zoe Panas · August 21, 2019

San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone, and with it, an exclusive interview from Syfy Wire with the stars of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in San Francisco and on Broadway.

In the interview, Nicholas Podany (Albus Potter on Broadway) and Jon Steiger (Scorpius Malfoy in San Francisco) got together to talk about their reactions to getting the starring role(s), the fantastic special effects that bring the magic to life onstage, and the nature of their characters’ deep friendship.

Podany has spoken in the past about how Albus’s relationship with his parents brings depth to his character. Here, he and Steiger expanded on Albus’s friendship with Scorpius.

Steiger called Scorpius “the loneliest child on the planet,” and he highlighted the important role that Albus has played in his life.

What I love about Albus is that he pulls Scorpius out of the little secluded hole that he’s in.

The actors agreed on one thing that many fans of the series have known for a while, which Podany said of the two main characters.

They’re perfect for each other.

Not only are Albus and Scorpius fast friends, but the actors behind them are too. It turns out that Steiger was so excited to learn that he’d got the role that he couldn’t wait to tell Podany about it when they saw each other at a performance!

When it comes to the performance itself, Steiger just couldn’t get over how realistic the magic looks.

I still am sort of like, ‘Wait, hold on, can we do that again?’ I registered what happened, but I don’t believe that that’s actually what happened.

If all this talk has you bursting to see the magic in action, never fear: NYC Broadway Week is (nearly) here! Twenty-four shows, including Cursed Child, are offering two-for-one tickets in September. Visit this website for more information from Playbill.

If you haven’t seen Cursed Child yet, will you take advantage of NYC Broadway Week? If you have, what do you think about Albus and Scorpius’s friendship?
