Domhnall Gleeson Stars Alongside His Brother in New Comedy Series “Frank of Ireland”

by Jillian Loveday · March 27, 2021

Domhnall Gleeson (Bill Weasley) stars as the ridiculous and clueless sidekick in a new Amazon Prime series, Frank of Ireland. The series, which wrapped filming last April, is an Irish comedy with Gleeson working alongside his brother Brian Gleeson once again, acting as best friends in the six-episode series.

Frank, played by Brian Gleeson (Snow White and the Huntsman, Assassin’s Creed), is the typical failure-to-launch 32-year-old man living at home with his mother (Pom Boyd). Frank lives as a failing musician, with his head in the clouds and no prospects for the future. To make matters worse, his ex-girlfriend (Sarah Greene) has moved on with a new boyfriend. His best friend and loyal companion Doofus (Domhnall Gleeson) provides support along the way as Frank tries to navigate the reality of life.

Watch the trailer below.

This isn’t the first time the two brothers have worked together. In 2018, the Gleesons joined their father, Brendan Gleeson (Mad-Eye Moody), and their other brothers, Fergus Gleeson and Rory Gleeson, in Psychic.

Frank of Ireland is coproduced by Channel 4 and Amazon Studios. Both Gleeson brothers are executive producers of the show with Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford and cowriters with Michael Moloney. Brian Gleeson says the awkwardness of any transition in life makes this comedy relatable.

Frank, we thought of as a teenage boy with a temper, basically. Maybe we were reaching back into our own childhoods in some sense. He’s a man who is suffering from a severe case of arrested development. The whole story’s about him trying and failing to move on.

Frank of Ireland premieres on Amazon Prime on April 16. It will later air on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, although the date has yet to be announced.

Potter Quote

“She stopped you killing me. And I’ve seen the real you, I saw you last year. You’re a wreck. You’re barely alive. That’s where all your power got you. You’re in hiding. You’re ugly, you’re foul —”
