Daniel Radcliffe Rocks the Squeeze Box in Official “Weird Al” Biopic Trailer

“Weird Al” Yankovic is nothing if not devoted to parody, and his biopic promises full fidelity in that respect. Dropped on August 29, the official trailer for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story features former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe in the titular role, embracing both irony and accordion with ease.

The trailer pokes fun at biopic clichés right from the childhood origin story, showing a young and frustrated Al Yankovic at the dinner table with his parents. “Your dad and I agreed it would be best if you just stop being who you are and doing the things you love,” says his overly earnest mother. This leads to a rebellious montage of Yankovic studying the accordion on the sly, being caught out at a “polka party,” and finally culminating in the watershed moment of the creation of “My Bologna.”

The trailer goes on to preview his discovery by Dr. Demento (a top-hatted Rainn Wilson), a salacious, if ill-advised, relationship with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood), and several musical performances. Daniel Radcliffe, by all appearances, plays his part with a comic gusto that justifies the excitement around his casting.

Aside from his fans, Radcliffe was also heavily endorsed by “Weird Al” himself, who quipped, “I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for.” Radcliffe has returned the admiration in spades.
