The Royal Mint Releases New “Harry Potter” Coin

There may not be a lot you can buy for just 50 pence these days, but the Royal Mint has gone about making a version of the coin we nonetheless consider quite valuable. For the first time since its 2022 commemorative coin collection celebrating the 25th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, a new collection of 50-pence coins is now available for purchase.

Like the previous release, this newest one is inspired by the first installment of the Harry Potter book series. The 2024 commemorative collection, titled “The Winged Keys,” depicts that heart-pounding scene in which Harry, Ron, and Hermione must take on Professor Flitwick’s contribution to protecting the Sorcerer’s Stone. Immortalized in metal, a broomstick-supported Harry reaches out to grasp one of the enchanted flying keys, his Seeker skills paying off nicely, not for the last time. The obverse of the coins features an effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.

Three new coins from the Royal Mint depict Harry on a broomstick chasing a flying key.

The Royal Mint produced the collection in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, with product designer Bella Biggs responsible for remastering the illustration. The coins come in a variety of metals and thus range from £12 for Brilliant Uncirculated to £1,220 for Gold Proof. A £21 option features the stylized illustration brought to life in color.

There’s never been a better reason to start a coin collection. Will you be making a magical purchase from the Royal Mint?
