Put on Your Fanciest Outfit – We’re Heading Back to “Downton Abbey”

Downton Abbey has been missing from our screens since 2016, and we have been waiting for a chance to return to the Crawley family home ever since. Now, the first teaser trailer for the Downton Abbey movie has dropped and revealed that we will definitely be returning in 2019.

The trailer doesn’t feature any dialogue or clips of familiar characters, but the shots of the grand house and grounds with the iconic theme music are enough to get us excited. Dame Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall) is set to return as the disapproving but lovable Dowager Countess of Grantham, and Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge) joins the cast, but her character is still unknown.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Gareth Neame explained that although the movie will feature everything fans loved about the TV show, it will be bigger and better for the big screen:

We wanted a kind of storyline and sense of scale and production value that exceeded even the very high production values the TV show was remembered for. On the big screen, it just had to look a little bit more lavish and a little bit bigger and better.

It is expected that film will pick up not long after the sixth season ended, which means that we will likely join the characters at some point during the mid-1920s. Although no details have been released about the plot, Neame has said that it will be the mix of drama, comedy, and romance that fans love:

It’s a return to these really beloved characters and seeing them in new sets of circumstances and how they will deal with those, and hopefully, a good mix of the drama, comedy, and romance that had been the mainstays of it all.

We can’t wait to see what situations these characters find themselves in! Luckily, fans won’t have too long to wait, because Downton Abbey is set to hit theaters in September 2019.
