Gryffindors Who Really Belong in Different Houses

by Morgan Warnock · December 1, 2021

At first glance, we can see why the Harry Potter characters belong in their Houses. But let’s take another look. Here is a list of seven well-known Gryffindors who could have been Sorted into another House.

1. Percy Weasley as a Slytherin

Percy often valued his position at the Ministry over his relationship with his family. His ambition for power and status caused him to ignore his loving family even when his father nearly died.

2. Neville Longbottom as a Hufflepuff

Despite often failing at tasks the first time around and often being bullied for it, Neville never gave up. He would always brush off the insults and try again. He may have struggled in his classes, but he was always a hard worker. And once Neville did find things he excelled in, he was always very humble about it.

3. Albus Dumbledore as a Slytherin

Dumbledore’s hunger for power and world order caused him to become distant from his family. He knew he should have been home caring for his brother and troubled younger sister, but that didn’t stop him from dreaming about running away with Grindelwald in search of the Deathly Hallows.

4. Hermione Granger as a Ravenclaw

Hermione often cared more about her education than her health. We frequently see Hermione pushing herself to the breaking point to learn as much as possible. Even her boggart is of McGonagall telling her she had failed all her classes.

5. Remus Lupin as a Hufflepuff

Remus has always been the voice of reason, especially when it came to talking down Sirius. But when it came to leading, he preferred to follow. He was always content to allow James and Dumbledore to take the lead and was even willing to run away to help Harry search for the Horcruxes.

6. Ronald Weasley as a Hufflepuff

Ron will put his life on the line if it means helping a friend. Even though he had just cause for leaving Harry behind, Ron always returned as the ever-loyal friend. Also, while he couldn’t care less about a mountain of homework, he showed his willingness to work hard to earn and keep his position as a Quidditch player.

7. Harry Potter as a Slytherin

Harry is a natural-born leader, and nothing will get in the way of him saving the day. He will even resort to manipulating others to get what he wants, such as when he was prepared to lie to Griphook about giving him the Sword of Gryffindor.

Potter Quote

“I’m three years older than you were when you fought You-Know– Who over the Sorcerer’s Stone and it’s because of me Malfoy’s stuck back in Umbridge’s office with giant flying bogeys attacking him!”
