IQA Announces Finalists for Continental Games 2022

by Veronika Kohoutová · November 30, 2021

In August, the International Quidditch Association (IQA) opened bidding for the 2022 IQA Continental Games. According to its plan, the finalists should have been announced on October 15. However, they were announced a month later on November 16.

The 2022 IQA Continental Games include some of the most prestigious Muggle quidditch tournaments, and the IQA European Games and IQA Pan-American Games will be held as usual. The IQA didn’t try to organize the first IQA Oceania-Asian Games as in 2020, and the bidding for the tournament wasn’t open this year.

The IQA Pan-American Games will be held for the second time. The first Pan-American Games were held in Richmond, Virginia, in 2019. The last time that the IQA was looking for new locations was in 2020, and the finalists were both from Mexico: Mexico City and San Juan del Río, Querétaro. The 2021 IQA Continental Games were later canceled, and after opening the new bidding for 2022, there were questions about if the finalists would be the same.

Now we can confirm that the finalists are different and that neither one of the new locations are in Mexico. The new finalists are Lima, Peru, and São Paulo, Brazil. The IQA has yet to announce which location has won the bid.

Our finalists have strong event-hosting capacities, and we look forward to having further conversations with these bidding parties to work out the best possible agreements for our stakeholders before finalizing host locations.

Even though the IQA should have announced the finalists for the IQA European Games 2022 first, the winning bid from Limerick, Ireland, was announced instead. This location was one of the finalists for the IQA European Games 2021, with Madrid, Spain, as the other finalist. The IQA has not announced the date for the IQA European Games 2022 yet; it will be announced along with the winning bid for the IQA Pan-American Games.

Limerick is also the host location for European Quidditch Cup Division 1, which will be held on June 4–5, 2022. This might be a complication because the IQA European Games are usually held in July or at the end of June. There is a chance that both tournaments, the IQA European Games and the European Quidditch Cup, will be held in the same month and in the same city.
