“Secrets of Dumbledore” TV Spots Queerbait Us No More, Also Show Tina, the Blood Pact

by Lucy O'Shea · March 17, 2022

After months of wondering where the promotion for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was, we have been treated to some new footage thanks to five new TV spots and the release of a full scene from Warner Bros. in less than 24 hours.

We’re going to dive into them below, but consider this a light spoiler warning for anyone who wants to know as little as possible before settling down in the movie theater to watch the film.

TV Spot 1: “Because I was in love with you.”

Finally, we have dialogue that confirms that there once were romantic feelings between Dumbledore and Grindelwald! This TV spot shows the two wizards in a restaurant and flashes between clips of their duel, Grindelwald’s electoral antics, and Dumbledore with the Mirror of Erised. While we’re glad we no longer have to rely entirely on subtext to prove the existence of romance, this clip only shows Dumbledore’s profession of past love. Grindelwald instead asks Dumbledore, “Do you really intend to turn your back on your own kind?” The restaurant also appears to burn in the final moments of the clip, which may or may not reflect how well the conversation went.

TV Spot 2: “Would this be one of your regular haunts?”

The second spot features more clips of Dumbledore and Grindelwald in the restaurant but focuses on the blood pact. Here, we see the blood pact wrapped around Dumbledore’s hand and wrist while Grindelwald says, “Sometimes I imagine I still feel it around my neck. How does it feel around yours?” For the first time, we also see a look at what Tina could be up to in this movie! She appears to be in a room with a group of people, all staring concentratedly at the same thing.

TV Spot 3: “There were rumors about a powerful magic.”

This spot has Dumbledore narrating over clips of what appears to be the adventures that each member of the newly formed “good guy” team goes on. Dumbledore can be heard saying “the past whispers to you” shortly before his line “when I was young, there were rumors about a powerful magic.” Could this be referring to the Deathly Hallows, which we know from the final book in the Potter series that he and Grindelwald became obsessed with as young men? Or could it refer to the power of an Obscurial?

For fans of the beasts in the Fantastic Beasts series, there are some good clips of Pickett and Teddy the Niffler.

TV Spot 4: “That’s my wizard friends.”

This spot shows some of the more lighthearted moments we can expect to see in Secrets of Dumbledore. As in clips from the trailers and other TV spots, we get further scenes of Newt, Theseus, Jacob, and Eulalie “Lally” Hicks at Hogwarts. While the focus of this clip is still on how the team can stop Grindelwald, it also gives us glimpses of humor in the movie. Dumbledore awards Newt with “three points to Hufflepuff,” and we see more of Jacob in the Great Hall with Hogwarts students.

We also have a second appearance of Tina, who is walking toward someone on the street. Could it be Newt?

TV Spot 5: “If we hope to save our world…”

This TV spot shares some of the footage of the fourth TV spot but also reveals new footage of Lally and Jacob outside his bakery, the writing on the mirror, and Dumbledore saying, “You’ll have to trust me, even when every instinct tells you not to.”

Blood Pact Scene

Finally, Warner Bros. has released a scene that appears to be set in the Hog’s Head, in which Dumbledore explains to Theseus and Newt the blood pact he has with Grindelwald and shows its power. This is probably the clip with the most spoilers in it. You have been warned!

There is certainly a lot to theorize about here! Keep your eyes peeled for more TV spots as the release date for Secrets of Dumbledore approaches.

“You’ve picked the losing side, Potter! I warned you! I told you you ought to choose your company more carefully, remember? When we met on the train, first day at Hogwarts? I told you not to hang around with riffraff like this!”
