After Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was released in markets including the United States on April 15, the box office figures for the film painted a complicated picture. Over a week has passed since, and another question has arisen, this time by way of a press release from online casino PartyCasino and Intelligiants. That question is this: With the Wizarding World films at $9,198,243,071 in box office sales as of April 14, will Secrets of Dumbledore carry the franchise over the $10 billion mark?
From what we can tell based on PartyCasino’s infographic and other sources, it looks like it could be a while, but it’s not completely impossible. If we take that figure of $9,198,243,071, that means that Secrets of Dumbledore would need to bring in above the equivalent of $801,756,929 globally. (Note that this figure is just an estimate since the film was released in many markets before April 14.) According to Box Office Mojo, as of April 24, Secrets of Dumbledore is sitting at $280,327,000 worldwide. For some comparison, we have The Batman, which stars multiple Wizarding World alumni and was released on March 4 in the United States. According to the same table from Box Office Mojo, The Batman has brought in $754,317,661.
Looking at information for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 on Box Office Mojo, that film brought in $1,341,511,219 during its original release, while PartyCasino gives that number as $1,328,766,590. In comparison, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them brought in $814,037,575 during its original release according to Box Office Mojo (and $811,724,385 according to PartyCasino). In other words, the target that Secrets of Dumbledore would need to hit is less than what the first Fantastic Beasts film grossed worldwide.

PartyCasino has taken a look into the spend behind the Harry Potter movies, including the [w]orldwide [b]ox [o]ffice takings, noting that despite a 60% increase in production spend on Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the [w]orldwide [b]ox [o]ffice takings amounted to under half of the final Harry Potter film. In fact, the last film in 2018 had the lowest opening weekend of all the previous movies in the series at just $62,163,104.
The highly anticipated release of Fantastic Beasts: [The] Secrets of Dumbledore being only days away on 8th April and 15 April (US) is unlikely to come in under $200 million to produce. Will the latest instalment rekindle the wizarding wonder or is the magic truly dying for the franchise?
With a brand[-]new Grindelwald, played by Mads Mikkelsen, there is hope for the franchise especially in the UK, with top 3 positions based on global Google search trends for both Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies.
Author and creator J.K. Rowling will likely cash in regardless of new movie releases and their success, already with a net worth estimated around $1 billion, by [sic] far higher than [that of] any Harry Potter star. Will the 25-year anniversary of the first Harry Potter book break the spell and restore the magic to the series?
